Genetic Factors Influence Female Infidelity -Study

LONDON (Reuters) - Genetic factors influence female infidelity and the number of sexual partners women have, British scientists said on Wednesday.

They studied the responses of 1,600 pairs of identical and non-identical twins in a confidential survey to look at the impact of genes on behavior.

"We found that around 40 percent of the influence on the number of sexual partners and infidelity were due to genetic factors," Professor Tim Spector, director of the Twin Research Unit at St Thomas' Hospital in London, told a news conference. <snip>

"More than 90 percent of the women admitted to having had thoughts of infidelity at some time," said Spector, who reported the findings in the journal Twin Research. <snip>

I suspect it has more to do with dysfunctional childhoods and a desperate need for love and attention than any "genetics"

You might have been kidding but identical twins are going to tend to have very similar levels of attractiveness. Of course, this would still be genetic so I'm not sure that I'd call it a flaw in the study.

that biologists always assumed were headed by a dominant male who sired all the offspring have found that a full 40% of offspring are NOT the descendents of that "dominant" male. If infidelity is in the genes, it's in all of us.

People who have worked in human organ transplant matching will tell you that the figure for humans is far lower, about 15% where Daddy is not the sperm donor.

That infidelity packs such an emotional wallop is horribly sad, since it's such a common behavior. Perhaps in a perfect world where one person weren't socially and/or economically dependent upon the other it wouldn't be so.

it's all genetics because we can control our instics but to say that genes don't play a role is just as stupid.

I think that if you have the ho gene doesn't mean you will cheat, you just have to work harder not to.

has everything to do with female infidelity. Monkey packs protect their females from intruders during the day but the females sneak off at night and go to other monkey packs to breed. This way the gene pool does not become stagnant. Every time one of my friends complain that their wife or girl friend is going out on them I tell them this Monkey pack story but it don't seem to help. :evilgrin:

If one spends their entire adults life with the same partner, the offspring will all be similar (if there are offspring. One supposes there's a chance one could mate with a sterile male) ... the 'variety' of partners would create more 'branches' of the family tree, increasing the herd.

In a purely genetic world the game is to get your genes, well at least half of them, into the next generation.

Consequently having offspring is good. Having offspring with multiple mates might be good half the time (assuming you have an average set of genes).

BUT, having MORE offspring is ALWAYS a good way to get your genes into the next generation.

Women must wait about 9 months to get to have a subsequent opportunity.

Men must wait about 7 minutes.

The biological logistics favor men if they can find another someone in a blue dress.

nature cared less about feelings and equal rights. It's all about survival and cheating is part of it. More partners you have the better the chance of diversity. Some of those kids are bound to survive.

The male with the best genes oten isn't the best provider who will stick around and help with her children. It may be advantageous to have a husband who has a lot o resources and will still around and secretly become impregnated with that super atttractive bad boy.
Men cheat because it is good to have stick around one mother o his children to give them a better chance to survive while impregnating other women on the side.
I'd like to think that most o us are better than that. We are a civilized people. Marriage is about love, respect, and mutual trust. We can be better than our evolutionary instincts.
