WTO approves sanctions against the US
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4045979.stm

"The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has given Europe, Japan and others the go-ahead to impose sanctions on a number of US companies dumping low-cost goods.
The sanctions are in retaliation for the Byrd Amendment, a rule that allows US firms to blow the whistle on "unfair" trade practices.

The $150m (£79m) in fines against the US could be imposed in early 2005. "

14. What?
Why are you cheering against Robert Byrd (one of our finest Democratic Senators)? We should support our leaders and not cheer against them.

20. Wonder if he'll be blamed
when he was just trying for a way to force a little parity, give our own sectors a shot at fair trade. Enforcing fair trade practices will be painful initially but its worth the cost if we can keep jobs home and stop the worldwide predilection toward cheap labor above all else.

5. Not we, but rather the repukes, we are just stuck on this train for the
ride.
It is going to be a ride through hell before we get back on track.

6. We're all guilty in one way or another...
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 05:59 PM by seafey
Did we protest when the US backed out of the Kyoto Treaty? Did we (Dems, that is) hit the streets en masse when we figured out what happened in Florida in 2000? Have we demanded the media report the whole truth? Have we *really* done everything possible to make our government what it should/could be?

I know I'm guilty too- I haven't done everything in my power. But to put 100% of the blame on the Repubs is an unwise thing to do in my opinion...

23. Absolutely. Thanks for saying that.
We benefit from the Mercantile policies of this country by a high standard of living and other perks, and whether we disagree or actively oppose its actions of unremitting greed, we are all at fault. We're less at fault by degrees depending on our actions, so come comfort can be taken there, but self-absolution like the one in the post to which you responded is nothing short of denial.

Republicans and other greedy users refuse to accept any responsibility for their own or our collective national actions; let us not be like them. The a la carte view of personal responsibility is dangerous, self-effacing and supremely incorrect.

7. What this country needs..
is a BIG dose of humility. A serious economic downturn as a result of our arboreal leader's policies? Fucking excellent! Maybe THAT will finally wake up Idiot America to the fact that they've been had (as in fucked over).

15. "The $150m (£79m) in fines", tells it all, before awols first term
you could buy the euro for about a buck. After four years
of awol the dollar is worth about 68 cents. I've shifted
my dollars to euros. I talked with my family who are
rural Florida republicans, and they are getting concerned.
The aked me for advice, and I told them "Don't vote republican."

16. Well,
At least if they do sanction us, we won't be sending any more money to the other countries. (not allowed to trade with sanctioned countries) then we can use the money that won't be sent out to pay down the resident idiots debt.

17. hmmmm....anybody notice
when it comes to war...no problemo for the neocons to endorse
unilateral action...

but when it comes to trade, they magically are multi-lateralists?

Shouldn't this be opposite? Has anybody else noticed the WTO
is always ruling the US is "illegal" while the other "most favored"
nations never seen to have any problems?

Beyond the mulitnationals who originally pushed for the WTO
and are behind much of it's policy...

doesn't it appear that the US, the #1 economy is getting gang banged
by the other 1st world members?
