Canadian Parliament rejects gay marriage ban
Gay marriage appears to be gaining increasing acceptance in Canada.

Its Parliament has rejected a move by the country's Conservative Party to ban gay marriage.

Elsewhere, a provincial court has ruled in favour of gays seeking pension benefits.

In Ottawa, an attempt to introduce legislation defining a marriage as between a man and a woman was voted down in committee.

Meanwhile, a high court in the province of Ontario voted to give gay couples so-called survivor benefits, which are pensions given to the widow or widower of a deceased.

1. Give us your tired, your poor, your exceptionally well dressed.
Yeah, it's going to happen here - everywhere except maybe Alberta. The Federal govt. is working on legislation and it's already legal in 9 provinces and territories. What's more it's accepted on the street - in most places I've been anyway, people think nothing of it.

2. And people wonder why I'm looking at emigrating to Canada. . . .
Not that I'm gay. I just don't want to be part of oppressing gay people is all.

4. Is this an issue all over the world? Heavens to Betsy!
We have a war going on, we will have a bankrupt country before long, we have terrorists worldwide, we have hunger, poverty, diseases, and environmental problems to mention a few worthy things to eliminate.

Someone tell me why in hell are we discussing marriage of gays???? I guess it's just one more of those things I just don't get.

I think we should have amendments to all constitutions that marriage should be eliminated and we all do whatever makes sense to us as long as we aren't harming anyone else. Whatever happened to: Do unto others...?

8. Ok...but remember
The last time the US tried that we (along with the Brits) burned the white house - that's why it's white (whitewashed the scorch marks)

6. Hah, this is just blatant Anti-Americanism!

I keep hoping that as the rest of the world sees how ugly and hateful our RW agenda is, they will respond by being more open-minded and liberal. Wouldn't that be a kick in the nuts for Bush?

Of course, Canadians probably don't need our bad example to prod them into doing the right thing. It seems to come naturally to them. I salute my brothers and sisters to the north!

9. Canada Will Get America's Best and Brightest People
Think about it. If you're young, intelligent, and well-educated, are you going to stay in a country that's in constant war, becoming more religiously repressive, and bankrupt, or are you going to live in a country that's only a few miles away, is tolerant, is peaceful, and has sound social policies that actually help the people.

My guess is that we will lose an entire generation of Americans.

10. Not a whole generation

After all, our immigration is capped at 250,000/yr - a certain percentage of which (I think it's 10% but don't quote me) is slotted for Americans. (I arrived in 2002) But you will lose your best and brightest, about 25 thousand of them a year - those who are, as you mentioned "young, intelligent, and well-educated," and you left out gay, but, you will also lose those whose skills are in the most demand here - doctors, engineers, scientists etc...

There are though a great many who will not go largely, and I think this is tooo funny, because it's cold. There are actually Americans, and I've talked to them who say, sure the US is "in constant war, becoming more religiously repressive, and bankrupt," and Canada is "only a few miles away, is tolerant, is peaceful, and has sound social policies that actually help the people" but it's cold, so I'm not going. Canada is a huge country, bigger than the US, bigger than any country but Russia and yes, if you get in the far north, near the artic circle there are inhumanly cold, actually dangerous winters (and even summers at times), but if you look at Toronto (where half of all immigrants come when they first arrive) and draw a straight line from Toronto across to Europe you will find yourself somewhere in France. Did you ever here someone say "oh I'd love to go to France but it's too cold there". Toronto does get winter, we get ice and snow and all that but really - you get yourself a pair of gloves and a good winter coat and you suck it up. Too funny, I think that's just one of our preliminary immigration tests.

12. Those Americans That Don't Go To Canada
Will go somewhere else. Intelligent people don't remain in repressive cultures. Just look at the Middle East.
