Supreme Court Is Set to Consider Medical Marijuana
OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 27 (AP) - Traditional drugs have done little to help Angel Raich. Beset by a nightmarish list of ailments that includes tumors in her brain and uterus, seizures, spasms and nausea, Ms. Raich, 39, says she has been able to find comfort only in marijuana, which was recommended by her doctor.

It eases her pain, allows her to rise out of a wheelchair and promotes an appetite that prevents her from wasting away, she said. Her doctor, Frank Lucido, said marijuana was "the only drug of almost three dozen we have tried that works."

On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case that will determine whether Ms. Raich; another plaintiff, Diana Monson; and similar patients in California and 10 other states can continue to use marijuana for medical purposes.

At issue is whether Congress has the constitutional authority to enforce federal drug laws in states that allow the use of drugs the federal government has banned.

2. When drugs like Vioxx and Baycol are being recalled because
they kill people, it would make sense to use something that comes from the earth if it helps people. When I was at the Marijuana and Hemp museum in Amsterdam I found out that humans have been using marijuana for 8500 years. Not one person in history has died from ingesting marijuana...not one. (not directly anyway, not to say that people haven't been killed in car crashes while under the influence, however, marijuana wasn't what killed 'em)

3. Me thinks
it's mostly big Pharma that want it banned. Just like home remedies.

This should be deceided by the States, not the SC.

5. HOLD ON.
Alcohol in moderation has known health benefits. Alcohol and driving are deadly.

The medical benefits of marijuana are known and should be available to American citizens.

BUT DON'T YOU DARE PRETEND THAT GETTING STONED AND DRIVING IS NOT AS DEADLY AS GETTING DRUNK AND DRIVING.

Understand I have no sympathy on this earth for a drunk driver. Or a stoned one. Dead is dead. Either method kills equally well. And I would hang every one of those selfish self-indulgent assholes if I could. But that's just my personal vengeful spirit, still pissed that 18 months is considered sufficient for taking the life of a two year old.

I don't forgive stolen elections and I don't forgive vehicular homicide.

16. That was my point.
The previous poster was saying that stoned people sometimes cause accidents and I responded that if they were smoking pot they could have been drinking as well which would make them more likely to cause accidents.

21. I will admit, I drove stoned once.
I didn't want to. I had had brownies the night before and waited and waited and waited for it to kick in. I finally gave up and went to bed, and woke up the next morning ...

... STONED.

I had to drop off some equipment somewhere that morning, and I didn't have anyone else around who was willing to do it for me. So I bit the bullet and got behind the wheel. I hated every single minute of it.

I will never do it again. EVER.

19. Exactly
Has there ever been a documented death from marijuana? I was making the point before when someone gets in a accident and they test positive for marijuana they usually have alcohol in their system as well. I personally don't believe in driving under the influence of anything including cough syrup if the label tells you not to. Some people need marijuana to be able to eat and keep food down and to relieve pain. I don't understand the governments position, when a doctor prescribes it. I mean what about morphine? It's legal if a doctor prescribes it. Sheesh.

9. The federal government already has medical marijuana
Welcome to George McMahon's Home Page
Welcome to my home page. I am the 5th legal medical marijuana recipient in the United States. Since March of 1990, I have been receiving a monthly prescription for medical marijuana from the federal government

http://chiana.trvnet.net/~mmcmahon/

FOR A VERY FEW PATIENTS, U.S. PROVIDES FREE MARIJUANA

http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v99.n315.a03.html

The whole thing about "marijuana" is a straw man argument. "Marijuana" was never the real reason why cannabis was made illegal. It's hemp. Don't believe it, then prove Jack Herer wrong and make $100,000.

"No one has taken the $100,000 challenge to prove me wrong. Why? Because I am right. The U.S. government has been lying to us since the early 1900s. Do economic interests and the police have more to say than the people about the future of our planet? How angry are you for being lied to by the U.S. government about CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA? Are you willing to make a stand right now? No one can dispute this information and knowledge. YOU have to join me in this fight. Either you are on the U.S. government's side or you are on my side."--Jack Herer

20. Just like a lot things in the good ole US of A
An economy set up by and for the Corporations to control the well being of their regulated (captured) markets. Most laws written today in one way or another are for that purpose. The last thing on the mind of people writing and making the laws seems to be protection and safety of the public in general or as a whole. The Patriot Act was the caper of the whole shindig. This was the law that said the government is only answerable to the government (violation of the 7th amendment). This is the writing off the "We the people" in the constitution.

We really do need a revolution, a revolution that makes the imperative of abiding by what the original papers of the state direct us to. The SCOTUS is really an usurper if follow the laws that gave any group of people provisions in the first place. A local movement of decentralizing power and unhinging them with the no confidence movement seems to work wonders.

10. Don't hold your breath. No, wait. Do hold your breath.
Yeah, whatever. We all had our fun. And we're OLD NOW. So just go away you judicial fuddyduddies. I'm just so resentful now. I mean, my bong sits in the cabinet, cold. And Spinal Tap reruns are my only form of happiness. God, I think it's time to find a new life. I mean, sex and drugs and rock n roll were everything. Now it's just rock n roll. Can you tell I'm resentful? My favorite line in the movie is when the drummer says that with sex and drugs, he can do without the rock n roll. I'm so bummed out man..................:)

Ouch. A little off topic perhaps, but to me that statement is just plain sad. Even depressing.

OK. I'm over it now. My bong sits in my lap, warm. As I type. Sorry big fella'.

11. Chief Justice Rehnquist
might be well served by a bit of doobie considering his condition.

It does boggle the mind that there would be a problem with anything that made a sick person feel better. The government has no business in this.

This all became crystal clear to me a couple of years back when I watched some debate on cable news about medical marijuana. There was a person who opposed it who said "We already have drugs to combat nausea, etc." Yep, she worked for a pharmaceutical company. Guess it would cost her company big bucks if something as cheap and easy as getting stoned was successful in the treatment of the side effects of chemotherapy. Less people buying her overpriced and ineffective drugs.
