School strafing by F16 brings changes, divides a region (Patriotism Issue)
snip............

It has led to changes in the way pilots bound for overseas wars are trained, and divided local residents _ some of whom fear for their safety and others who consider it profoundly unpatriotic to question the military during a time of war, especially when nobody got hurt.

"Had it missed the school and hit one of our houses, we'd be talking about dead bodies now," said Township Committeeman Arthur Midgley. "We can't have this. This must never happen again."

But Terry Hickman, a 10-year U.S. Army special forces veteran who was preparing to hunt deer in Bass River near the edge of the Warren Grove Gunnery Range a few days later, grew agitated while discussing such complaints.

"Let 'em alone; they're over there putting their lives on the line for us," Hickman said. "We shouldn't be bitching about it. That guy (pilot) probably feels so bad about this. He's probably going to get sent overseas and he might not even come back. As long as no one got hurt, this whole thing should just be forgotten."

1. Hey whack job
"He's probably going to get sent overseas and he might not even come back."

Just tell us how many Air Force Pilots have been killed in Iraq. Not counting the ones we killed with our super duper Patriot Missiles.

4. Sounds to me like the guard is doing the right thing here
"But without waiting for the panels' reports, the Guard already has made several changes in pilot training procedures, including requiring them to keep a safety on their weapons until they are over the range near their targets, and altering approach routes to the range so that any accidental gunfire is likely to land in sparsely populated woods west of the Garden State Parkway instead of the more heavily populated coastal areas. "

This is all it takes, a few simple changes and it is already better. There is a need to maintain a military and there is a need to keep the people safe.

"Let 'em alone; they're over there putting their lives on the line for us," Hickman said. "We shouldn't be bitching about it." This idiot will never get it. If it fell out of the sky, landed on his face and started to wiggle around he still would not get it.

5.  that's nothing, a few years back
an artllery unit out of Fort Hood forgot to add 180 degrees to it's fire mission and consequently lobbed several 155 mm howitzer rounds into the back yards of local residents instead of into the impact area. Ooops!

8. In general, the Air Guard is composed of "good, intelligent, people"
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 08:08 AM by ElectroPrincess
When I was in ROTC, the local Air Guard would take us (thanks to good relations between our Supply Sergeants) with them when they flew their Hueys (yeah, dating myself-in the late 70s). Although I was just a teen, I remember them as "very professional."

When they flew "nap of the earth" with us, they were thoughtful enough to do this over the desert NOT over any population.

It breaks my heart to see the good people in the Guard and Reserve misused in such a horrid and tragic cause. :(
