Blair Dismisses 'Climate of Fear' Accusations
By Andrew Woodcock, PA Political Correspondent
Prime Minister Tony Blair today rejected accusations of scare-mongering and insisted that Labour was offering a politics of “hope not fear”.
Optimism about Britain’s future would be at the heart of the party’s message at the upcoming general election, he said.
Mr Blair was accused of breeding a “climate of fear” with last week’s Queen’s Speech, which was dominated by Home Office bills dealing with threats ranging from international terrorism to anti-social behaviour.
He today defended the decision to concentrate on security issues, insisting that progressive governments ignored them “at their peril” because they could not afford to allow them to be seen as the territory of the right.
