Dow Ends Lower as Wal-Mart Sales Drag
Awww poor Wal-Mart

By Anna Driver

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blue chips ended lower on Monday, under pressure from disappointing Thanksgiving sales from No. 1 retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc., while tech stocks drew support from Apple Computer Inc. and drove the Nasdaq to its highest close in 10 months.

Dow component Wal-Mart fell nearly 4 percent after it slashed its forecast for November sales on Saturday, saying customer traffic slowed toward the end of the week.

Shares of Apple jumped more than 6 percent after brokerages raised their price targets on the maker of the iPod musical device.

The forecast fueled concerns that high oil prices and lackluster job and wage growth may cut into consumer spending in the critical holiday shopping period, particularly among lower-income earners

1. Oh, the "lower-income earners" that have been neglected by Bushco
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 10:27 PM by Gloria
for the last 4 years are suddenly being found???? I guess they'll blame a dismal sales season on them and let Bush off the hook again...

3. I hope Walmart's earnings continue to drag
I dislike that company intensely. I can't forgive them for driving out of business many small town mom and pop stores and the way they wear their patriotism on their sleeves all the while screwing their employees.

6.  My little town voted mostly republican.
We have a wal-mart. Now all of the republicans are begging folks to shop downtown at their little stores. While I don't particularly care for wal-mart, I can't say that I care for those who vote the republicans in then take offense when a corporation takes all of their business and puts them out on the street. Wal mart is a republican corporation, it is putting small republican business owners out of business. I have tried to care...but cannot. I am not shopping downtown, nor am I shopping wal-mart. Truthfully, one part of me wants to shop at wal-mart, for spite. These folks may think twice about voting republican when they no longer have a shop and have to work at wal-mart.

13. Same thing happened in the small town where I grew up in Ohio
and the same thing is happening all over NC.

Like you, I choose the third option. I try hard to spend my money only on things I really need or really want, and I try to buy them from companies that support democratic ideals.

4. I would like to see W-Mart sucked into a karmic black hole
I hate that store and everything it represents.

Years ago, I once had the misfortune of coming into the store early for something and heard their "cheer." There's no way to describe the eerie shiver that went up and down my spine.

I haven't shopped at W-Mart for 3 years now and never will again.

Chart for your viewing pleasure.

Looks like Costco took off since the peak of the election. (unlike Walmart) :)

8. Holy Moley!
Do you think they're getting the picture? I haven't bought anything in a Walmart (except for an emergency bathingsuit purchase in Florida during an unexpected layover in Florida) EVER.
I let my Sam's card lapse 2 years ago, and now spend my $$$ at Costco. Perhaps we ARE making a difference.

14. Wow, that's very interesting...
given that the calls for boycotting Walmart were suggesting Costco as a better alterntive. That graph suggests the boycott could very likely be having a direct effect!

17. I hope it's from the boycott
Honestly, I don't know what's causing it, could be lawsuits, who knows. I actually didn't know how Costco was doing, I figured I'd check on a whim - I was surprised. I like to think it's from people waking up from The Great Slumber.

11. Yes!!! Maybe it's just not Walmart
Since the election I have refused to do business with an entity that gave heavily to the Republicans and let them know it.

If there's one thing Republicans pay attention to its monetary greed. Yes, I think there are enough of us to make a statement by hitting the Republican donors in the pocketbook. That's where they feel it the most.

I saw "Dow ends lower as Wal-Mart sells drag." :-D

Now that would be fun! Finally, a low priced outlet for short neckties and size 16 high heels!

23. I'm off to Costco today
As soon as I get my little guy on the school bus! I am lucky to not have a WalMart nearby. I wouldn't shop there no matter what- I've been in Wal-Mart three times in my life. Once in Port St Lucie Florida just to see what one looked like (that was 8 years ago when there were no WalMarts in downstate NY), once on Long Island when they were the ONLY place I could find the Jessie from Toy Story 2 doll that my daughter desperately wanted (and they didn't have it) and once in Monticello NY when we stayed at a shit hole motel with rocks for pillows and made an emergency run in the middle of the night to buy pillows so we could try to sleep in our smelly fly infested room.

That is what I associate with Wal Mart.

24. Dive, dive, you hypocrites.
Keep on importing goods made by third world countries for ten cents a hour, while companies lay off people who could actually buy the goods. Add to that their support of Bushco, and the people who know the election was stolen who won't shop at their stores. Maybe they should rethink their policies, but they won't.
