Early anti-Bush demos fizzle in Canada
OTTAWA (AFP) - Hopes for early mass protests in the streets of Ottawa on the eve of Tuesday's visit by US President George W. Bush fizzled out, as journalists outnumbered demonstrators.

A loose coalition of groups opposed to just about everything Bush supports had promised two demonstrations hours before Bush was due to jet into Ottawa Tuesday aboard Air Force One.
...
According to a quick head count by journalists, the protest attracted 39 demonstrators, 42 journalists and television crew members and three police officers.

A second, ostensibly larger, demonstration scheduled for the midst of the evening rush hour -- was called by a group calling itself Students Against Bush.

Nobody turned up. Further protests however were expected on Tuesday.

Efforts to contact protest organizers were unsuccessful, with the phone numbers listed by organizers remaining unanswered.

4. It's the Bush Mandate...
Obviously, the juggernaut that is Bush's Mandate is already steamrolling over dissent, both here and abroad! When will you people wake up and realize that Bush is the man Jesus would most like to have a beer with?

2. This is news? Why the F bother protesting the day BEFORE he arrives?
That little shitbag is going to be in for a surprise Tuesday, I guarantee that.

He's such a chicken shit for not going to Canadas parliament. Scared of hecklers. Boo hoo.

That's the "strong" and "steadfast" leader all the pukes talked about? He doesn't even have the guts to stand before Canadas government. He's a failure, plain and simple.

Demonstrators board buses to Ottawa to protest visit by U.S. president

1 hour, 1 minute ago

TORONTO (CP) - About 400 Toronto peace activists boarded buses at the crack of dawn Tuesday, heading to Ottawa to join the thousands expected to demonstrate during U.S. President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s first official visit to Canada.

The Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, one of many city-based groups heading to the capital, planned to roll out a so-called "unwelcome mat" for Bush - a giant carpet-turned-protest-sign.

7. What a ridiculous article!
The buses just left this morning from Toronto, Montreal, etc. This is an obvious feed from the US admin to try and curtail coverage of any protests.

10. no kidding!
It's like sitting in the stands the week before the Olympics are supposed to start, wondering where all the competitors are!

I was watching the Tuesday coverage on Newsworld, where the reporters were standing around saying "only a few hundred people so far" -- then the marchers flooded onto Parliament Hill (led by a guy in a Bush mask clutching a fake nuclear missile), and you could hear the media folks exclaiming in the background.

11. I heard there were at least 5000 later on Tuesday
The article was talking about protests on Monday, so, the article was silly. They set up a straw man and knocked it down.

I like how they wrote it up though "on the eve of Tuesday's visit", making you think nobody was there Tuesday evening rather than Monday evening. The propaganda mill just never gives an inch.

13. I'm surprised by how many fell for this article...
Even Randi Rhodes today was making fun of Canadians for not showing up for the protest.
