A Close Look at Fallujah Insurgents’ Lab
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 12:40 PM by leftchick

~snip~

It looks like a shelf in an elderly lady’s bathroom, scattered with half-full and almost empty bottles so old the faded labels are peeling off. But Qassem Daoud, Iraq’s national security adviser and Prime Minister Allawi’s confidant, calls it a “chemical laboratory” where Fallujan insurgents supposedly made “deadly explosives and poisons,” including anthrax.

Noninsurgents probably have more chemical containers underneath the kitchen sink at home.

But Fallujah’s where Al-Zarqawi, Jordan’s notorious kidnapper, assassin, and reputed master poisoner, reportedly gave US Marines the slip. And so when Daoud claims Zarqawi left souvenirs behind, the world pays attention.

But not everyone is impressed.

Former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix urged restraint: “Let’s see what the chemicals are....Many of these stories evaporate when they are looked at more closely.” Blix added that “the chances” soldiers had actually “found something” significant “are...relatively small. I would be surprised if it was something real.”

1. And my basement is an atomic laboratory!
If that is a fully functional chemical and weapons lab than we should all skip down to the Radio Shack and start making time machines out of old Tandy computers.

2. When The People Running The Country Have Never Spent Time In A
College chemistry lab - what more can you expect other than mere speculation?

By there definitions, each of us has a deadly chemical lab lurking below our sinks and basins.

Pity the poor Iraqis that have done nothing more than shop for drain and bowl cleaner. There zeal for sanitation will net them months at Abu Ghraib.

9. Look at the protective suits
if this was a real threat wouldn't the guys head have protection and possibly external air supply? My guess is that little kid is missing his chemistry lab toy.

6. Wow. It's bright blue.
They forgot to through in the dry ice to make the cool bubbles, and the large Van de Graff generators.

And frankly, green food coloring has a nicer aesthetic effect for mad science props.

On a more serious note, how it that round bottom flask standing upright by itself? This photo is fishier than the subject.

7. My stepfather told me about this over the weekend
"You know they found a chemical lab in Iraq"

I said that I hadn't heard that and asked "Where did you hear it?"

"Fox"

"OH" I let it go but I knew this was probably what the deal was-blow totally out of proportion.

Then why is the blue vial covered with tinfoil and the clear vial fitted out with a cork stopper???
You'd think the Iraqis would be more careful with these
deadly explosives and poisons.

Yeah it looks like a little kid's chemistry set scattered on the ground.

Why isn't the one soldier wearing any head protection???

16. A treasure-trove of damning chemical WMDs!!!
Lets see:

Windex in a beaker: check.
Dusty roll of aluminum foil: check.
flask of mysterious "clear shit": check.
Radio Shack speaker and amateur wiring to light-switch: check.
Wall transformer for above electronics project: check.
Three bottles of chem-set chemicals: check.

Ohhh! I'm so fucking scared! Alert the security/SUV moms! Begin napalming fallujah! For fuck sake, how lame is this? This is like saying it was all worth going to Iraq and killing 100,000 women and children to rescue a cat out of a tree. There are better meth labs in my neighborhood, and you don't even need to go to Iraq to get them (of course, there's no oil in my neighborhood).

23. well look at this one: Pentagon Says Insurgents Had Chemicals Lab
Iraq (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Qassem Dawoud, reported the find Nov. 25. He said in Baghdad, Iraq's capital, that the laboratory was discovered in the southwestern sector of Fallujah, where pockets of insurgents were holding out against Marines who entered the rebellious city on Nov. 8.

Rodriquez told reporters Friday that the lab's chemicals, including sodium cyanide and hydrochloric acid, which if combined could be used to make hydrogen cyanide. That is a potentially lethal chemical agent.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041204/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/iraq_us_military&cid=542&ncid=1480

The same one, the US military at the time knew nothing about. And the Iraqi Minister claimed finding....

They were electroplating cheap jewelry! It would explain the battery (needed for the electric current) and the sodium cyanide (used to dissolve the gold) and the Hydrochloric Acid (used to etch/clean the cheaper metal).

You know I meant it as a joke but it does almost make sense.

39. sure
you can get hydrochloric acid (aka muriatic acid) to etch brickwork or masonry

people also use it to adjust the pH of swimming pools

Or just spit up some HCL out of your own stomach. You might be able to squeeze out more than they had there..........
