Holiday weekend a turkey for stores
http://money.cnn.com/2004/11/30/news/economy/thanksgiving_weekend/index.htm?cnn=yes

Booming Black Friday sales didn't hold up over Thanksgiving weekend, marking a disappointing start to the holiday shopping season, according to an industry report Tuesday.

Total sales for Friday, Saturday and Sunday rose just 2.9 percent, according to the report from market research firm ShopperTrak.

While sales through Saturday increased 3.5 percent from the same period in 2003, sluggish sales on Sunday dragged the final tally for the weekend down, the report said. The long holiday weekend got off to a strong start with sales on Black Friday up 10.8 percent.

"Although Sunday was the weakest day of the Thanksgiving weekend, retailers shouldn't be too alarmed as this is a typical and traditional pattern from previous years," Michael Niemira, chief economist at the International Council of Shopping Centers and an author of the ShopperTrak report, said in a statement.

4. Friday was big at our mall, but I went for catfood on Saturday
Petsmart is right next door to Target.. I parked right in front.. There was little "activity" at Target..

I suspect that people went for the "super bargains" and then just quit..

I bought food and litter and a "felt mouse" that was dismembered in minutes :(

5. That's right!
BLAM! TAKE THAT!

Hold on to your dollars, DUers. If you feel compelled to spend, spend ONLY on blue companies (or give a donation to DU, eh?).

6. Speaking of carcasses,
Here at the DU, many of us are participating in a boycott of various retailers, but first and foremost Wal-Mart.

I hope the biggest loser is them.

7. Local news in DC reported that people who earned $100K+
Were going to be spending more this holiday season.

Naturally, they neglected to report on people who make less than $20K and can't afford health insurance.

They also didn't mention whether people will actually be purchasing more items with their increased spending allowance.

Pigs...

8. Well, I don't want to shed any sun on your rainy parade, but...
sales are up, not down, relative to last year and there are two additional shopping days this year. So, this doesn't look particularly gloomy. Plus, I suspect that each year internet sales grow and those weren't counted in this survey. - K

9. There are still plenty of idiots out there......
that will go buy the cheap crap made in China or Indonesia - crap you can do without and have no use for and they'll get even farther into debt without any idea how they'll ever pay it off. They are living in a dream world and when that dream world crashes down around them they are in for a major shock.

Me and hubby own our modest but nice home, own both of our relatively new cars (two and three years old), have no debt and put savings every month into a passbook savings account. I watch as the stupid Americans try to buy contentment and happiness with gewgaws and trinkets and doodads that they'll tire of in a month and laugh to myself at their ignorance. Too bad they're the ones ruining our country by basing their entire existence on consumption.

10. I was finished shopping in Mid November.
I spent a grand total of 75 dollars. I convinced my family last year there should be a 15 dollar limit per person. There is nobody in my family who can't afford to buy themselves what they want- I refuse to spend 2 or 3 hundred to buy something they don't want.
My sister in law was upset about the new rule but she is a shopping and gift giving junky. I am not.
