Music industry, file-swappers square off
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-5471478.html

The largest copyright infringement case in Australian history began Monday as Sydney-based Sharman Networks and other "respondents" involved with peer-to-peer software Kazaa faced 30 record company "applicants" from Australia, North America and Europe.

1. they hate us for our freedoms
kids are loading up external hard drives with their music, loaning it to friends, they take what they want, load their music, and so on & so on. it's off line, & leaves no trails.

stop that, music industry.

the music industry has been fighting a futile rear-guard action since the advent of the cassette. the grateful dead saw the future.

give it up.

2. Musicians can earn a living by doing live performances.
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 05:14 PM by Massacure
If you make $1 per person per concert, that is $50,000 a concert for $50,000 people.

3. Not to inject too much reality here
I am opposed to the heavy-handed tactics of these folks, but there is a lot more to holding live concerts and you just can't do it for that small an amount of money.

Things that must be paid for:

The concert venue itself - $100,000+
Security
Lighting, sound, video and stage techs
Electricians
Publicity
Insurance
Taxes
Ushers/ticket takers
Admin costs
Ticket costs (printing and sales)

A 50,000 person concert is likely to cost $500K to a cool million to stage.

ITunes has the right idea.

The music industry doesn't like this idea because such a model cuts them out of the equation.

4. $1 million dollars divided by 50,000 people is only $20 a person.
That doesn't seem like such an insane price for a night out...

Anyways ITunes does have a good business going, but people should be able to lend music to friends. The whole Bush "ownership society" and the only thing we get for our music is a stinkin "license."

Welcome to Merika, Hyprocracy at it's best!
