U.S. rejects Guantanamo detainee torture claims by the Red Cross

WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross has accused the U.S. military of using tactics "tantamount to torture" on prisoners at the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a claim the Pentagon flatly rejected.

Responding to a leaked ICRC memorandum in The New York Times on Tuesday, the Pentagon strongly denied allegations of abuse of prisoners being held at the base and the State Department said it believed detainees were treated humanely.

"We vehemently deny any allegations of torture at Guantanamo Bay and reject categorically allegations that the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo is improper," said Pentagon spokesman Navy Lt. Cmdr. Flex Plexico.

He said in written comments the Defense Department had conducted a number of investigations into allegations of abuse at Guantanamo Bay and found "no credible instances" of abuse.

3. Godwin's Law aside

You know, I'm very hesitant to bring up Nazis in online discussions.

That being said, the first thing I thought of when I saw this was a German Propaganda film we were shown in World History when I was in high school. In it, concentration camps were shown as "tough but humane". The implication was that they were simply work camps where "lazy Jews" were finally forced to put in an honest day's work, but that they were of course provided with all necessities and treated as human beings.

same thing imperial japan said about it's tactics in china and NANKING.

they are trying to claim since they aren't in a 'official' uniform they don't count :crazy:

Remember what Rumsfeld did after Abu Ghraib came out? He said that the whole problem was not that it happened, but that it was leaked because of digicams.
