US eyes collection of college-student data
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2004/11/30/us_eyes_collection_of_college_student_data/

--
The federal government is considering the creation of a national database to collect information and track the progress of every college student in the country, triggering criticism from education and civil liberties advocates worried that it would amount to a loss of privacy for millions of Americans.

''An incredible potential exists for confidential information being used inappropriately" under the proposal, said Sarah Flanagan, vice president for government relations at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. ''There is a Big Brother aspect of all of this that concerns us."

The idea, proposed by a research wing of the Department of Education, is designed to improve federal oversight of students' enrollment rates, graduation rates, and tuition. Currently, that information is provided only in summary form by universities, leaving gaps in national college statistics. When students transfer from one college to another, for example, they show up in the federal rolls as dropouts.

-snip-

Some education groups believe that a new system for tracking students individually would provide far better answers to those questions. Under the new system proposed by the National Center for Education Statistics at the Department of Education, each student enrolled in college would have a computer record that included name, address, birth date, gender, race, and Social Security number. It would then track field of study, credits, tuition paid, and financial aid received and would follow the student if he or she transferred or dropped out and later reenrolled.

6. The government is asking for more and more
The government is asking for more and more information about us, while at the same time they are concealing more and more information about the workings of the government.

To me, this is disturbing; they seem to be trying to know everything about us, with us knowing nothing about them. Pretty soon we won't have to worry about anybody hating us for our freedoms, because we won't have any left.

And the Chimp wants to spread democracy in Iraq, and other countries? Let's try democracy here first.

9. JOKE'S ON THE FREEPTARDS
Dumb pieces of shit -- bitching about left-wing authoritarianism, and they go ahead and vote in "big brother's other brother." They thought they were getting federalists and "libertarians," when what they actually got were Big Government Christo-Corpo-Fascists. Of course, if they weren't smart enough to see it before the election -- how much is it going to take for their dumb asses to figure it out?

13. Wonder if this is related to collaboration between Education and
Selective Service reported in this article? I have been seeing signs of a skills draft including my daughter's Berkeley boyfriend being conned by recruiters into taking a special test to see where he would best fit!

Government Looking at Military Draft Lists
by Alma Walzer

McALLEN, Texas — November 15 — It’s taken one year, seven months and 19 days of combat in Iraq for the Lone Star State to lose 100 of its own.

Texas is the second state, after California, to lose 100 service members, according to The Associated Press.

With continuing war in Iraq and U.S. armed forces dispersed to so many other locations around the globe, Americans may be wondering if compulsory military service could begin again for the first time since the Vietnam War era.

The Selective Service System (SSS) and the U.S. Department of Education now are gearing up to compare their computer records, to make sure all men between the ages of 18 and 25 who are required to register for a military draft have done so.

The SSS and the education department will begin comparing their lists on Jan. 1, 2005, according to a memo authored by Jack Martin, acting Selective Service director.

While similar record checks have been done periodically for the past 10 years, Martin’s memo is dated Oct. 28, just a few days before the Nov. 2 presidential election, a hard-fought campaign in which the question of whether the nation might need to reinstate a military draft was raised in debates and on the stump.....

15. take a deep breath
relax - this is nothing new. I work for at a University and we have been able to track students who transfer to another university for years. There is a service called student clearinghouse or something like that. If a student in our program is not registered for classes for a couple of terms, we simply send a list of student ID numbers to the registrar, they enter them into the clearinghouse and if any of those students applied for financial aid (almost every student does) then bingo, we know where they transferred to.
