Brushed Off by the World, Bush Calls India for Help
Brushed Off by the World, Bush Calls India for Help

By Jefferson Morley
washingtonpost.com STaff

Tuesday, September 9, 2003

From Asia to Europe to Africa, President Bush's televised appeal Sunday night for international help in rebuilding Iraq drew as much scorn as sympathy in the online media. Only a response in India offers encouragement to an administration scrambling to regain its war footing.

In Brunei, the oil-rich enclave in southeast Asia, the headline in the Borneo Bulletin minced no words: "U.S. Admits Failure in Iraq."

The editors of the East African Standard declared that "the involvement of the U.N. must depend on Bush's recognition that the anarchy is basically a London and Washington problem."

Bush's appeal, reported Michael Settle in the Glasgow Herald, "drew an embarrassingly muted response across the globe."

6. No, they will not-
Ever wonder where all those a'murikan jobs have gone?
Look no further!
They have been outsourced to India.
And besides, Sharon just went to see them
and will be supplying them with lots of goodies
to defend themselves from the wicked 'other' brown people
next door to them, who might just be a little pissed when
they join the US troops...
Heads up Moms and Dads of India,
Your kids are about to become cannon fodder too!
But unlike our Moms and Dads in the US, at least
you will have jobs!

18. India has 1,015,181,142 people ...
... 398,823,315 with jobs. You could transfer every US job to India and still not reach an employment ratio of 0.60.

4. Yes they will!!!
The Indian people were staunch opponents of this imperial power grab and the government both the BJP and National Congress Parties opposed the war! India will not be going to Iraq!

7. India, like the Corporatists here,
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 01:15 PM by BeHereNow
Don't give a DAMN what their people think.
Now that the transnational corporations have moved
so many jobs there, and they have the promise
of Sharon to be supplied with plenty of protection,
They will ship their sons and daughters off to do
the bidding of the Empire.
Just watch and see...

5. Interesting...

Chimpy could actually try to bargain with the Indians. Trade his tacit support of IT outsourcing to India in exchange for troops. No troops and he goes on an anti-outsourcing tirade, which would make him look concerned about jobs, at least to the uninformed.

8. India Will Not Send Troops To Iraq
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 01:41 PM by LoneStarLiberal
No way will India send combat troops to Iraq. They might send support untis but I don't think there is a very good possibility of that.

The first and foremost issue with India and the U.S. is Pakistan. The Indian government and Indian voting public care about the preferential treatment that the U.S. has afforded Muzzy in Pakistan and how we have rewarded his government with lavish amounts of aid while tying not one penny of it to the progress toward a peaceful Kashmir. They remember well that when India stood beside the U.S. as two of the world's foremost democracies, the U.S. took up with Pakistan, a military dictatorship, out of blatant convenience.

Although they were not seriously challenged, the ruling BJP-led coalition was recently threatened by a no-confidence vote from the Congress party led by an Italian with the last name of Gandhi. They have active terrorism both in Kashmir and recently in Bombay (Mumbai). The last time the Indian army was deployed overseas (granted it was a very short distance overseas), the LTTE gave them a beating they didn't forget for a long time and Tamil terrorism both occured on the continent while they were deployed and followed the Indian force home.

I don't see where there is any reason, any need, any incentive for the Indian government to further incite Islamic wrath at them by deploying to Iraq. Like I said in the beginning: Support troops possible but not probable, combat troops neither possible nor probable.

10. Did anyone read the article in LBN about the U.S. - India - Israel axis?
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 04:17 PM by Dover
Lots of big defense contracts are in the mix. India is also squeezed in between China and Pakistan and remains vulnerable..reliant on U.S. protections. So it's not ONLY jobs that cause India to stay close to the U.S. Will they send troops? Don't know

11. Whenever Bush Calls for Help, American Pay for the Troops
The U.S. taxpayers are paying over $26,000 per Polish Soldier so that Bush can call his "coalition" broad based.

If he's calling India, Americans had better bend over, because he's spending their money again.

21. Double dipping Nicaraguan soldiers' participation?
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 12:37 AM by InkAddict
Remember the side-line Iran-Contra arms scandal/PROMIS backdoor tracking software DOJ theft. OK,so US citizens are State-taxed on imported goods "made in Taiwan." FAIR TRADE? Anti-Contra-ns(?)then join the "coalition of the willing" and maybe get paid off by good ol' Uncle Sam as a Polish-led portion of the international force. Talk about passing the buck around, and around, and around! $87B duh - ok, tax objectors, save your receipts/labels and charge off on 1040/1040A as gifts to BFEE charity!

From an earlier DU post yesterday: http://www.americas.org/Nicaragua/

"The Polish-led international force of which Nicaragua is a part was delayed in its deployment by the huge bomb which destroyed the mosque at Nayaf and killed Ayatoláh Mohamed Baqir, but Nicaraguans are very concerned about the safety of their soldiers, and the FSLN is considering a court challenge of the deployment as unconstitutional. Comptroller Poessy insisted, "Any monies that come into Nicaragua in the form of donations from abroad belong to, are the property of, the Nicaraguan people, not the government. In this case, where my office is investigating whether our Nicaraguan soldiers were sent overseas with life insurance policies that violate the Law of State Contracts, we need to be fully informed by government. No donation, even small ones, can remain hidden for very long. For President Bolaños to claim that what is donated does not have to be accounted for is absurd. I expect that Defense Minister José Adán Guerra will send us the relevant information during this coming week."

More: Suggest exchanging "Contra" for "Al-Queda" Quid-pro-quo(?)

13. What a pest
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 09:19 PM by cliss
Wasn't it just a few months ago when the US was 'hot on the phone' with India trying to drum up support for the war in Iraq. They called every country including Antarctica, but they didn't get much results.

Next, they called after they had invaded Iraq. They needed more troops, especially muslim-looking troops to elicit more sympathy. Now, more phone harassment for troops and $$$money. What phone solicitors.

I feel sorry for the poor person in India who had to answer the phone as Bush kept calling.

If I were Vajpayee, I'd say "Sorry, I'm not home".

15. I think it's a wonderful idea to have Hindu troops occupying an Islamic...
...nation.

After all, Kashmir is a WONDERFUL example of co-existence by practitioners of the Hindu and Islamic religions.

Why, they get along almost as well as the Israelis and the Palestinians.

War Worries
Support for Attacking Iraq Begins to Wane Across the U.S.
ABC News

By Bill Redeker

Oct. 14 -- As the administration prepares for war with Iraq, a new mantra has emerged in the campaign to win the hearts and minds of Americans and, in effect, put Saddam Hussein on notice.

"America speaks with one voice," says President Bush.

<snip>
Under a plan worked out by American negotiators, the Bosnian Muslims hired MPRI using money that was provided by a group of Islamic nations, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia. These nations deposited money in the United States Treasury, which MPRI drew against.

17. India & China
Don't forget that Pakistan & China have been aligned for quite awhile. Shrub has tried to go nose to nose with China and backed down. If there is a promise to back India against China then a deal could be done.
It could all be burried in legalize and one would expect that India would extract the best price in the situation.

In addition it could serve his immediate requirement for a re-election platform.

Don't count out India's help in this case. Could be leading to a situation similar to that in Israel.
