(Jerry) Springer will host local radio show

TV talk show host Jerry Springer will debut a three-hour weekday radio talk show here in January.

The former Cincinnati mayor and TV anchor will launch a 9 a.m.-noon call-in show on WSAI-AM (1530) when the Clear Channel station switches from oldies music to liberal talk. He wants to syndicate the show nationally from Cincinnati, he said.

"There is clearly an opportunity for new voices to be heard today around the country," Springer, 60, said today. "There is so much going on in the world today, and to be part of that dialogue will be fun."

Darryl Parks, operations director for Clear Channel's four AM stations here, said the station had been negotiating with the former politician for months.

A few other notes from the article:

- Springer will do the radio show Monday-Wednesday from Chicago, where he tapes his TV show. Likely, this will be from Clear Channel's studios there. He will do his show from Cincinnati on Thursday and Friday.

- This is a one-year deal so far, and he will continue with his TV gig until he gets tired of it.

- No word on who will syndicate his show, but Clear Channel owns Premiere Networks, which syndicates Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, Glen Beck, Jim Rome and Bob and Tom, among others. If he goes with Premiere, this will mark Clear Channel's entry into the liberal talk syndication fray, and he could turn up on other Clear Channel liberal talkers. For now, it's a local show.

- No word on whether Steve the bouncer will join him, or if there will be fighting spouses on his show.

1. There's enough garbage on the air already
I don't care if he's a democrat or a republican. Let's get something good on the air

3. I never knew he was a democrat.
Usually trashy shows like those marriage ones are hosted by Repubs. Taker Geraldo Rivera for example.

4. Would you believe Richard Bey is a lefty?
His show was even trashier than Springer's.

6. Have you ever heard him talk politics?
He's brilliant. And he might even appeal to an audience that would really benefit from some exposure to politics. Most people don't understand that it has on their lives.

It's not like he's a target of a criminal investigation and a serial divorcer.

7. I agree about his appeal
If his usual audience tunes in to his radio show and even 5-10% actually listen to what he has to say, he could draw some more typical "red-staters" to a blue message (no pun intended).

Some see pundits calling Democrats the "party of Jerry Springer."
I see a red-stater saying "But Jerry don't hate America. Jerry don't hate our freedoms. And he's a Dem!"

It's kind of a glass half-full type of thing.

2. I'll take it
Jerry is a sharp dude. Without the tawdry content, that ought to be a great show. Heaven knows, there is nothing good to listen to on the radio as it is.

8. Conservatives are licking their chops...they can't believe their good ...
...fortune with this move. Because every GOP shill will be reciting ad nauseum "party of Jerry Springer" and making "Jerry Springer" the face of liberal Democrats everywhere.

Jerry Springer is garbage. I don't care how much money and lipservice he gives to our side, it doesn't stop me from calling a spade a spade.

And I guess it's just a coincedence that Texas arch-conservative Lowry Mays, ceo of Clear Channel, is producing this show.

Get ready for it...you'll be defending the "party of Jerry Springer" from now until 2006. The prospect makes me sick to my stomach.

10. As if it's better to be the Party of Oxy-Contin Rush?
Or the Party of Phone Perv Bill O'Reilly?

Or the Party of Jail Bird G. Gordon Liddy?

Or the Party of Tax Cheat Alan Keyes?

Need I go on?

11. Exactly. We can't even claim moral superiority over that slime now.
...but it doesn't really matter, because our shills have been utterly ineffective at attacking those idiots anyway.

But you can bet that GOP shills will be in overdrive attacking Springer...and you know what, this one time they will be right. The guy is garbage, and I cringe at the fact tat he will be on the air advocating our positions.

13. Clear Channel signed him because he's a 'name'
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 05:03 PM by Fighting Irish
Everyone knows who Springer is, and I'm sure CC would like to develop some of their own liberal talent, as giving control of their talk stations to outside groups is almost unheard of for control freaks like CC. Not to mention they passed up syndicating their own homegrown talent (Randi Rhodes, Ste) in the past.

They also have Jesse Jackson, who does a weekend show. But it's a bit obscure.

CC (aka Premiere Networks, which is CC's syndication arm) obviously wants in on the action. What better place than a big name like Springer that will get attention? Remember, CC may be filled with a bunch of Republicans, but they make no bones that they're all about the money. If they just wanted a token liberal station to counter claims of being a bunch of biased wingnuts, they'd just leave it on KPOJ and brag about that. Obviously, they feel they can make some money and success off liberal talk, and create something out of some dying AM stations. I have no problem with that.

14. NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT
#1, jerry was MAYOR of cincinnati. he resigned after writing a personal check to a ho in northern kentucky. whatevur. he then resurrected himself by doing political commentary on WEBN, the local rock station that sponsors the labor day fireworks blowout. then, he became the NBC affiliate news anchor for years & years. THEN he started his FAKE white trash show. the show has had its run, and society didn't collapse from its pernicious influence, so who cares?

#2, LIBERAL talk radio in CINCINNATI? and you're getting picky about jerry springers' bona fides? this is an unprecedented tidal shift in a town that has defined prudishness. they ban COSMO for chrissakes. cincy has nothing but hate radio 24-7. that's it. the reds games are on hate radio WLW. if cincy has voted for kerry in the same proportion as columbus did, president presenile dementia would be licking his wounds in crawford today.

DON'T LOOK A FUCKING GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH. jerry has no skeletons in his closet, they're all in the open. he is a persuasive & committed liberal voice. if blue-nose cincinnati doesn't hold a grudge against jerry, why should you? did your moms throw a chair at someone on the show or something? i would take jerry over chimpy any day of the week.

go jerry! save america!

15. Here's the thing: I guarantee you would be mocking the GOP...
...mercilessly (as you should) if this human garbage were doing a conservative talk show instead.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I am not such a blind partisan that I can't see this guy for the trash he is. I don't want trash advocating for me under any circumstances.

You can't sit there and condemn pukes like Liddy, Rush, and Savage, and then turn around and say "go Jerry, save America." It's hypocrisy, at best.

Yes, this is a gift horse...of the Trojan wooden variety.
