Spitzer Vows More Reform if Elected NY Governor (1st Speech as Candidate)
NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer on Thursday drew an overflow audience of 1,100 supporters to his first speech as a candidate for governor and vowed to focus his reformer's eye on state politics.

"We sorely need to re-energize state government, make it smarter, more efficient, responsive and accountable," said Spitzer, who on Tuesday formally announced his run for the Democratic nomination for the 2006 race.

Supporters paid $1,000 a plate for their serving of chicken and political rhetoric at an overflowing hotel ballroom.

Spitzer, 45, instantly became the strong front-runner for the Democratic nomination, especially since newly re-elected U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who had been considered a possible candidate, announced recently he would remain in Washington.

1. we need a whole lot more like Eliot Spitzer
... hope he inspires others to proactively pursue accountability and justice in our institutions; and, to go after the corruption enveloping our Nation ...

3. If he stays on track,...he will do well,...but will face obstacles.
He'll have to prove his strength and courage and principles.

People are far less tolerant of sell-outs.

They want to witness leaders who demonstrate the courage of their convictions.

4. It's not so much Spitzer who's going to change NY

Democrats expect to win the NY State Senate in '06. Which should break up the long-running corrupt bipartisan gridlock arrangement in Albany- which has been great for the politicos and companies 'buying in' and such (some unions) but utterly horrible about the best interests of average, middle class NYers.

This being New York, legislature Democrats will hardly be innocents. But they won't have state gov't so beholden to as many particular interests, for one thing, and have to prove themselves for a term or two.
