Airbus to launch Boeing 7E7 rival
European aerospace group EADS gave the go ahead for Airbus to develop a 3 to 4 bn euro ($3.99bn to $5.31bn) jet to rival the fuel-efficient Boeing 7E7.
The decision was made at an EADS meeting in Amsterdam on Friday.

The 270-seat A350 will be a spin-off of the A330 but with longer range and modern materials that make it more competitive against the future Boeing.

Airlines want to cut fuel costs and mid-sized low-fuel consumption planes meet this need.

Technically the 7E7 is a A320 rip-off.

2. What happened to speed?
WTF Boeing dropped the Sonic Cruiser in favor of the 7E7 is still a mystery to me. Using the same composites, they could have created a bird that flew nearly supersonic, yet would be more efficient than the planes of today.

4. Speed is expensive
Once you get above mach 0.85 or so you hit the wall and fuel burn goes through the roof. One of the reasons the Scarbus is so fuel-efficient is that it cruises about 10-15% slower than the Boeing models. Controllers in Gander hate the A340 because they have to route everybody else around them.

3. If this plane costs $5 billion, who will buy it?
That's got to be the price of the whole A350 development program, not the price of one airplane.
