UN's Annan to Discuss Iraq with Powell and Rice

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) makes his first visit to Washington next week since calls for his resignation, meeting Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) to talk about Iraq (news - web sites), U.N. officials said on Friday.

Annan, who was already scheduled to be in Washington, was invited by Powell to meet with him and his designated successor, Rice, next Thursday, when it is expected they will discuss the pressing issue of U.N. workers for next month's Iraqi elections.

Annan also intends to raise the crisis in Sudan and joint U.N.-U.S. activities in Afghanistan (news - web sites), the officials said.

He will likely attempt to plant "principles" with a few words, here and there. But, will certainly avoid "controlling" the conversation.
