Ford Recalls 474,000 Escape SUVs
Edited on Fri Dec-10-04 05:51 PM by damkira
DEARBORN, Mich. - Ford Motor Co. said Friday it is recalling about 474,000 Ford Escape sport utility vehicles worldwide because of an accelerator problem that can cause the engine to race.

The automaker said it does not know of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

The recalled vehicles are from model years 2002 to 2004, and the vast majority are in the United States, Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley said.

1. Good for Ford.
Recalling before accidents and injuries occur is the right course of action. I hope it is a sign that they learned their lesson after the Explorer exploding tires fiasco.

2. Escape? Aren't they making an escape hybrid next year?
Bad PR right off the start.

11. Just Got One
Kudos to Ford for being the first to build a hybrid SUV.
I hope they sell a lot of them, while their more gas-guzzling
cousins rust unwanted on the dealer's lot. I think this is likely.

I am very satisfied with mine so far. We're seeing pretty close to
the EPA mileage and it's not fully broken-in yet. In slow traffic
it runs from electric power alone. It has regenerative braking,
which is really nice in the mountains. It is bigger than our old RAV4,
but it burns much less gas. It is the only 4-wheel-drive hybrid
available.

According to the Ford website the recall does not apply to my vehicle.

12. My experience is different - I still drive a 14 year old FORD vehicle
Passes the strict CA smog tests every year and drives like it did the day I got it from the factory. Never a single engine failure. I've had two clutches and three brake jobs, which is normal wear and tear on a car that's done over 140,000 miles.

Cute acronyms though.

4. Good grief . . . Ford vehicles have had this problem for years.
I can't believe they haven't figured this out yet and fixed it PERMANENTLY!!

In 1992, my neighbor's Ford Taurus ended up in my livingroom because of this problem and a few years later, Dateline NBC did a feature about this happening with a Ford vehicle where someone was killed.

5. Now they they have been recalled
will Ford do us all a favor and keep them?
God, I wish I could wake up and find myself in a world without a single SUV!

9. What about the Mercury Mariner?
Isn't that the same except for cosmetics? Or does it also come with an anchor?

Oh, and I think you get one of those spoked steering wheels kind of like a ships wheel. And a little propeller for the trailer hitch. Do you have to have old tires hanging over the sides? Is the hood ornament one of those carved women? Are there belaying pins instead of cup holders? Is there an optional parrot? Do you have to wear an eye patch while driving?

Just wondering.

13. Interesting. Didn't Dodges just get recalled by the hundreds of thousands
too because their wheels fell off? What's going on?
