Son of Oregon Sen. Smith takes own life

September 9, 2003

- WASHINGTON - Garrett Smith, the 21-year-old son of Oregon Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), died at his home in Utah, the senator's office said Tuesday.

Garrett Smith committed suicide on Monday, Gordon Smith's office said in a statement.

Garrett suffered from severe depression for many years.

Gordon Smith, a Republican, was re-elected to a second six-year term last year.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

4. the news blip says all 3 of their kids were adopted.
sounds like they really tried to make a difference. Very sad.

5. senator smith seems like a good guy
don't agree with him on many issues, but he comes across as really wanting to do good. also, aren't many kids who are put up for adoption but can't get anyone to take them in those who have some problems ? mental or physical which require more or special care than most other kids ?
