Coburn Wants to Keep Delivering Babies
WASHINGTON - Republican Sen.-elect Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, a politician and an obstetrician, wants to deliver more babies after he takes office Jan. 4, a request apparently at odds with Senate conflict-of-interest rules.

Coburn "merely wants to break even with his costs to maintain his medical practice," and he has had private discussions with GOP leaders as well as members of the Senate ethics committee, spokesman John Hart said Friday night.
...
Senate rules generally prohibit senators from earning outside income as part of an attempt to avoid a conflict between lawmakers' personal financial interests and their public responsibilities.

As a result, newly elected senators customarily are required to wrap up their business relationships quickly after winning their seats.

Malpractice insurance premiums for obstetricians are among the highest in medicine, and there was no reliable estimate on how much money Coburn would have to earn to cover his expenses, or how much time would be required.
...
Coburn had a protracted, well-publicized struggle with the House ethics committee over the same issue several years ago. While originally advised he would not be able to practice medicine, he ultimately prevailed. Ironically, the top staff aide at the House committee at the time is now working in a similar position for the Senate panel.

2. Hey Coburn, you can't have it all.
Either you're a doctor with coverage, a doctor with no coverage (and consequently few patients), or you're a senator. Hard choices, but realistic ones.

3. This is the "moral" Dr. Coburn--performed sterilazations w/o consent

But these questions are not being asked and, I think, for a very simple reason: At the heart of the Coburn matter are ramifications beyond fraud and consent and Medicaid bylaws so nasty and unsettling that even cable news does not want to get anywhere near the case.

Because, indeed, though Coburn is certainly a small-government fanatic of the highest order, his public image and political career rest on something far more visceral than fiscal responsibility: that is, heartland morality. This is a man who calls the "gay agenda" the biggest threat facing America, a man who prefers the death penalty for "abortionists."

The unspoken story is not that Coburn, by performing underage sterilizations on poor women, was somehow abandoning these morals but rather that he was carrying them to their logical conclusion. Thus appears the specter of eugenics, of an impoverished underclass - girls "who've already had three babies" - being ruled, as if by God through a clearly superior class, as permanently ineligible for future reproduction. For ultimately, the question of consent is beside the point: Who, honestly, do you think, brings up the question of sterilization? The scared teenaged mother facing an ectopic pregnancy or other possibly fatal condition? Or the kindly doctor, the good Christian, the congressman?

Coburn fields more questions on sterilization

By Carmel Perez Snyder
The Oklahoman

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Tom Coburn in a radio interview this week said he's performed "lots" of sterilizations on underage women during emergency situations.

Coburn, a physician, has fielded questions for several days about a lawsuit where an Oklahoma woman accused him of sterilizing her without her consent. Angela Plummer was 20 at the time of the 1990 procedure.

Coburn was asked if the situation could happen or had happened with other women.

"I've done this lots to women who have come in for emergency things, who have asked me to sterilize them, under age, when they, when they've already had three babies," Coburn said, according to the radio interview recording and transcript of a KRMG 740 AM interview with radio host John Erling.

11. Let's all hope he is successful.
The less time he spends on Senate business the better for all of us.

He is very wealthy which is the joke of this story. He could volunteer to serve poor women in DC and still afford his malpractice insurance. There is something cute about adoring young white women that those indignant brown people don't have.
