Bush Plans to Tout Security Improvements
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 8:49 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- On the eve of the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, President Bush is embarking on two days of events in which he will claim progress bolstering America against future attacks.

Traveling by helicopter Wednesday afternoon to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., Bush was giving local emergency workers as well as officials from the federal law enforcement agency and the Homeland Security department an update on efforts to improve homeland security.

Bush's remarks come three days after he delivered a progress report on his administration's efforts against terrorism abroad in which he focused on the war in Iraq and described it as the central battleground of the global war on terror.

Before departing the White House for Quantico, the president was to meet with the prime minister of Kuwait, a key Persian Gulf ally where thousands of American troops are deployed as part of the ongoing Iraq campaign. All told, 40,000 U.S. troops are based in countries such as Kuwait that are close to Iraq.

1. It IS too much but at least this year
At least this year we have at least one strong presidential candidate (Dean) who will loudly call the stump on his crappy security performance. In fact, the way * has left this country totally unprotected is one of his campaign themes.

And when Dean speaks out, the others will follow.

2. Bush is following poll that showed most say there have been "improvements"
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 09:24 AM by papau
Our media is very good at not stopping GOP lies - like Saddam and Bin-Laden working together (a belief of 70% those polled).

The Security improvements poll was on the wire last night (I forget which polling group) - but Bush is just trying to nail the false impression home with a little help from his friends in the media.

4. Meanwhile, real security is being ignored
http://xymphora.blogspot.com/2003_09_01_xymphora_archive.html#106317780296481716

"'As far as we know every other airport in the country is just as wide open as it was before Sept. 11,' says Rushing.

According to federal documents, flight crews have been warning the government for years. One pilot wrote of airport perimeters: 'There is no security.' Another said: 'Airport security is a joke.'"

People are being forced to go through time-wasting, expensive and demeaning search procedures, with the main victims of searching being singled out for racist reasons or for reasons of political repression (with blacklists for certain 'enemies of the state'). At the same time, Osama bin Laden himself could enter supposedly secure areas of airports and gain access to luggage areas or the planes themselves. Since the security is only as strong as its weakest link, and the main danger is from terrorists gaining access to the planes or what is put on them, the process of subjecting passengers to searches while completely ignoring the real dangers is completely illogical. Why has this been allowed to happen?:

. . . The main problem with the war on terror is that people tend to lose their fear of it over time, so it has to be constantly reinforced with bogus warnings, colored terror levels, and the obvious indignities of searches at airports. The searches can't be intended to stop terrorism, for otherwise the non-public half of airports wouldn't be left completely insecure. The reason for the security searches of passengers at airports is to keep up the illusion that terror is being combated while at the same time providing a continuing reminder that the terror threat still exists.
