Fort Carson Lifts Ban on Denver Post Reporters

DENVER (AP) - Fort Carson lifted its restrictions on reporters from The Denver Post a day after a spokesman said the newspaper wouldn't be allowed to cover events at the base because officials were upset by a story in the newspaper.

The front-page story Dec. 5 focused on mentally and physically ill National Guard and Army Reservists who say they have been denied quality care and are being pushed out of the service without disability pay.

Lt. Col. David Johnson, chief of public affairs at Fort Carson, spoke with Post Editor Greg Moore on Dec. 9 and agreed to lift the ban.

"This was never about impeding the First Amendment. This was about us (not) being able to tell our side of the story," Johnson said. "I think that relationships are very important."
