After Vote Mix-Up, N.C. Electoral College Goes For Bush
RALEIGH, N.C. -- In an election season filled with voting mix-ups and challenges, it wasn't surprising that North Carolina had trouble Monday getting its 15 electoral votes straight.

One elector signed on the wrong line, and another voted twice as the Electoral College gathered to officially name President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney the winners of last month's election in North Carolina.
...
In North Carolina, state law requires all 15 electors to cast ballots for the candidate that wins the state.

The confusion was quickly cleared up Monday, and with all electors picked by the Republican Party and all pledged to Bush, the outcome wasn't really in any doubt anyway.
....
he main question in this 54th meeting of the Electoral College was whether there will be a 55th gathering.

"As we become a more divided country, some feel the vote should reflect the vote in the state as it came in," Secretary of State Elaine Marshall said. "In North Carolina, it’s winner take all, and I don't know of an effort to change it."

3. The only way you'll see the electoral college "reformed"
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 09:47 AM by Strawman
is to make it even less majoritarian by allocating a state's Electoral votes by gerrymandered congressional districts or some geographic division that favors the Republicans even more. Remember how red that electoral map was outside of urban areas? They'll pack all our votes into as few electors as possible, fewer than now even. Given that choice, I'll stick with what we have.

There's just no chance in hell we'll get enough small states to agree to dilute their influence. What's in it for Wyoming or New Hampshire? We need enough smaller states to agree to any propsed amendment, but they never will. It would take one hell of a mass movement, almost a revolution really, to compel them to agree to that. I'd prefer to see the President elected by popular vote also, but that's really just spitting in the wind. I think it's more likely that the Republicans will hijack Electoral College reform to solidify power. They're trying to do it in CA already.

2. If they make an error on their ballot, their vote should be voided.
That's what they do to the People who vote. Fuck 'em.

5. One person, one vote. Anything to corral or manipulate the outcome is
utterly criminal and despicable.

6. How tough can this task be?
Two screw-ups here, one in Minnesota - it makes you wonder.
