Iraq's deadly insurgency continues at a ferocious pace
http://www.sltrib.com/nationworld/ci_2487534

~snip~

The insurgency in Iraq - which includes nationalists, foreign fighters and Saddam Hussein loyalists - is still ferocious. Fighting continues even in areas where the U.S. military has launched large-scale operations.
~snip~

Although the Marines did not specify where or how their men died in al-Anbar, citing operational security, a top officer there confirmed that efforts to pick through every house in Fallujah are plagued by ambushes and gunbattles.

Lt. Col. Dan Wilson, deputy of operations for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Fallujah, wrote in an e-mail that there are 21,656 structures that the Marines are in the process of clearing.

''Increasingly, we are uncovering tunnel networks, sewer systems and hidden rooms that they have been using to hide in, or to move from one location to another,'' he said. ''What we are uncovering are small groups of insurgents who have managed to move around, or evade our forces.

''In many instances, they are hiding under beds, or in spider holes, then firing at the last second in very close quarters. We have also found evidence of the insurgents getting high on drugs before attacking in a drug-induced state.''
Wilson emphasized that the number of attacks last week was 58 percent lower than during the assault on Fallujah, Nov. 4-11.
''We have the insurgents on the run,'' he said.

2. Iraq-nam. Just when you thought you won a battle...
...it starts all over again. And again. And again...

They just had a Reuters photojournalist and his mother on CNN Daybreak. He said he had to leave Baghdad because things are too dangerous now. He hopes to return for the elections...:eyes:

3. what does Bush expect?
You talk to a freeper and say, "What would you do if some foreigners came to your town and destroyed it, killed your neighbors and relatives who were not involved in the insurgency?" They inevitably answer that they'd fight and drive the foreigners out. But when I try and explain that that might be what is happening in Iraq, they shut their ears and explain that no, the insurgency is happening because "they hate us for our freedoms."

7. Yep. They just have the Lynch Mob jones
I used to think that the people who are conservative are just misinformed. Lately, I learned otherwise.

I had an idea presented in a philosophy class about Martin Luther King, Jr. They were discussing the notion that an injustice to one is an injustice to all. They kept beating around the bush with bullshit, and I finally spoke up and nailed their sorry asses. After explaining that all injustice is the same and that all hatred, prejudice, and discrimination goes hand in hand, they just sat there in silence, not quite able to look at me as I finished speaking.

The conservatives in this nation know FULL WELL what they are doing. They honestly are STILL locked in this failed ideal of taking advantage of people because they can get away with it. Then they drag God's name in the mud and claim that their little thievery spree is somehow divinely justified.

Our only hope as a nation is that most people are not conservative. They don't have any real political or social leanings. They need some kind of leader who will get the job done in their eyes. Kerry got bashed too hard and didn't have sufficient time to get known for who he is. We have got to get a better image for a President. Pure and simple.

6. And after a house is deemed "clear"
how many soldiers remain behind to guard that house to ensure that it doesn't become "unclear?" I'm guessing zero. So what is being done to prevent the "insurgents" (aka Iraqi men who are protecting their country) from re-occupying those houses? Is a house that is labelled "clear" at 9am on Thursday still "clear" by 9pm? How do you know?

The waste of time, manpower, money, lives, integrity, you name it... is totally, completely breathtaking.

8. Tunnel networks, sewer system and hidden rooms?
Damn. Did we just time-travel back to 1967 Viet Nam or what? And the part about insurgents "getting high on drugs and attacking in a drug-induced state?" How is this different from our pilots and the Go Pills?

How much more "Catastrophic Success" can we stand?
