Military Will March Front and Center at Inaugural Festivities

WASHINGTON — As he leaves the Capitol after taking the oath of office Jan. 20, President Bush (news - web sites) is expected to exercise a familiar presidential prerogative — reviewing the troops.


Then the real embrace of the military begins.


Bush, who campaigned for reelection as a wartime president, will have more than the usual military flourishes at his second-term inaugural ceremonies.


With 138,000 U.S. troops serving in Iraq (news - web sites) and casualties reported nearly every day, the White House wanted to showcase the role of the armed services in the war against terrorism as well as in the nation's premier display of a peaceful transition of power.


Officials are tight-lipped about details, awaiting a briefing this week from the Presidential Inaugural Committee. But the military theme will thread through the 10 days of inaugural events that are normally highlighted by pomp and circumstance, a time when the nation's capital turns into a lavish backdrop for the revelry of the winning party.

Bastille Day is a lawful and understandable celebration for such military pomp and circumstance. The inauguration of a president in the U.S. runs contrary to historical American sensibilities. (Notice I didn't say simply American sensibilities.) However, sensibility flew out of the window about four years ago...

We can taylor our signs for the occasion. Signs about benefit cuts, lack of armor, extended enlistments, unequal benefits for the reserves, extended tours in Iraq.

At least a substantial portion of them. Parts of the Old Guard were deployed to the middle east several months ago, although I think not to Iraq--possibly Kuwait or Dubai.

Worse, the "aggressor" training units were scooped up and shipped out as well. Who's training the out-of-shape, underequipped reservists and Guard unit now? anyone's guess, I suspect.

I was pleasantly suprised to see the protest footage from 2000 on F9/11. I never knew because the news didn't report on it. The only thing that will get me through that horrible day is knowing that people like me are in DC protesting.
