WTC Ruins Spewed Toxins for Weeks
"WTC Ruins Spewed Toxins for Weeks"
Wired News Report
1:26 PM September 10, 2003 PT

The burning ruins of the World Trade Center released toxic gases "like a chemical factory" for at least six weeks after the 9/11 attacks, despite government assurances the air was safe, said University of California scientists at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in New York.

The gases of toxic metals, acids and organics could penetrate deeply into the lungs of workers at ground zero, the study reported. A professor of physics and engineering said conditions at ground zero would have been "brutal" for workers without respirators, and slightly less so for those in adjacent buildings.

"The debris pile acted like a chemical factory," said the professor. "It cooked together the components and the buildings and their contents, including enormous numbers of computers, and gave off gases of toxic metals, acids and organics for at least six weeks." The report comes amid questions about air quality at ground zero and what the government told the public.

I've been trying to bring up this very important hidden issue for some time in a more specialized DU forum. :toast:

Here's the older thread where we've been debating this issue for a while now: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=125&topic_id=549

2. Here are a few more threads for you, Dancing_Dave!
This is indeed a crucial issue. Here are a two more LBN Threads on this topic for your interest; it would be best not to reply to the older one, thereby "kicking" the thread when it really isn't LBN anymore.

Former LBN Threads:

Ground zero air quality was 'brutal' for months (Posted September 10)

Senator Clinton to Block Bush EPA Nominee (Posted September 6)

3. Just awful
I read that report a while ago and it made me sick.

Whistle-Ass plans to run an all 9-11, all the time campaign -- I hope the fact his people covered up information like this and lied to the public defuses that issue.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but this "president" is beneath contempt.

5. More stuff about the CNBC piece in GD
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=315308

This is the information that phillybri posted in LBN a little while ago; a new GD thread has been started that claims Whitman lied...

7. The NYC department of Health is starting a registry.
They are looking to track 200,000 people who were downtown that morning, students, teachers, people whose buildings were destroyed, people who live in the area, people involved in the cleanup.

This is going to be a long study.

8. They need to check more folks than that.
I live on Houston Street and I have had lung problems every since 9-11.
You could feel yourself getting sick while breathing the air for weeks after wards. Just a sniff and my throat would get sore like when you have an infection.
