Allawi Front Runner to Lead Iraq

(Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi may return to power with American blessing after next month's election, even if he does not score a major victory at the ballot box. Iraqi officials say it is too early to predict who will be the country's next prime minister, but privately suggest that Allawi, a secular Shi'ite heading a list that includes several ministers from the U.S.-backed government, is considered the front runner if he wins a seat in the new National Assembly.

Nice democracy. Why not just forget the elections and have the US appoint puppets throughout the government. Same thing.

2. Isn't this more of a congressional type election
and not that of "prez"?

I thought they were re-electing a congress of source to draft a legal iraqi constitution and use that to set precedence for full election..

but who knows.. maybe i'm mislead :)

10. No, no, no. Chimpy has been saying democracy. I heard him myself
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 02:50 PM by NNN0LHI
What you are describing sounds more like an Afghan Loya Jirga type government where a former/still? oil company employee (Karzai) gets to play the part of president. Unless this is some new and improved democracy chimp boy is talking about?

4. The next several months are going to be very ugly (duh)
in Iraq. There is no way these elections are going to bring peace to the country...

Why would cutting our losses be bad? Just get the hell out of there...

12. they locked down everything for Allawi to go to a sports arena
to announce his candidacy. only the news reporters deemed it too dangerous to cover him there.

but really - does he need to campaign outside the green zone? they'll just declare he won, regardless... kinda like here.

20. Ok, I'll take that bet. I think bush is just stupid enough to think that
the people of Iraq will tolerate his puppet stealing
the Iraqi election. Those Iraqi's are much smarter
than many of the people here about stealing elections.

24. Pretty coincidental that all puppets * has chosen are destined to win.
I hope the Iraqi people know better than to vote for a puppet who makes threats the people. But the fix is probably in place already.
