Campaign of deception used to push patriotic song up charts
http://www.tennessean.com/local/archives/04/12/63065885.shtml?Element_ID=63065885

By JEANNE ANNE NAUJECK
Staff Writer

Country singer Chely Wright said yesterday she was dismissing the head of her fan club and shutting down a team of volunteers after The Tennessean learned that some of them posed as members of the military or their families to promote her latest song.

Seventeen members of a handpicked team of fans contacted radio stations around the country asking for more airplay for Wright's pro-military ballad, The Bumper of My SUV. It was all part of an organized campaign by leaders of the fan club who encouraged the team to do such things as ''tell 'em your husband is a marine — whatever it takes.''

After Wright learned that The Tennessean intended to publish an article about the campaign in today's newspaper, she issued a statement saying that she had dismissed Chuck Walter, a longtime friend who has headed her fan club since 1996.

Wright said she was ''shocked, saddened and deeply upset by this unethical behavior.'' She said Walter was ''an unpaid volunteer who acted without my knowledge or direction.''

1. Yes, the lyrics are as awful as you could imagine
I've got a bright red sticker on the back of my car,
Says: "United States Marines."
An' yesterday a lady in a mini-van,
Held up her middle finger at me.
Does she think she knows what I stand for,
Or the things that I believe?
Just by looking at a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

See, my brother Chris, he's been in,
For more than 14 years now.
Our Dad was in the Navy during Vietnam,
Did his duty, then he got out.
And my Grandpa earned his Purple Heart,
On the beach of Normandy.
That's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

But that doesn't mean that I want war:
I'm not Republican or Democrat.
But I've gone all around this crazy world,
Just to try to better understand.
An' yes, I do have questions:
I get to ask them because I'm free.
That's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

'Cause I've been to Hiroshima,
An' I've been to the DMZ.
I've walked on the sand in Baghdad,
Still don't have all of the answers I need.
But I guess I wanna know where she's been,
Before she judges and gestures to me,
'Cause she don't like my sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

So I hope that lady in her mini-van,
Turns on her radio and hears this from me.
As she picks up her kids,
From their private school,
An' drives home safely on our city streets.
Or to the building where her church group meets:
Yeah, that's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

6. My ironic little story
A young punk Republican flipped us off because we had a "Veteran for Kerry" sticker on our truck. Headed for the beach with a surfboard on his SUV, or more likely, his daddy's. Yeah, a surfboard, guess he missed the memo that his sport was elitist.

I have a friend who writes country music, maybe I should email him and have him make a song about that!

Nearly as bad as the "Boot in yer Ass" song from that Toby guy. I just don't get why country music has gotten so terrible in the past twenty years, and still makes money for the people who write and sing these rotten songs. Hank Williams must be turning over in his grave.

9. What stupid fucking lyrics.
Edited on Mon Dec-20-04 04:40 AM by Kurovski
Based on a true story? Not bloody likely.

This further confusing of an unethical illegal war started by money/power grubbing shmucks with our troops has just got me spitting mad.

What a flappy-douche-bag of a brain you'd have to have to confuse the two. Liberals learned that lesson during during Vietnam, but it's clear the propaganda/songwriter here doesn't care.

Would it never occur to the "bumper sticker" driver that they might've been flipped off fordriving like an asshole?

The singer's "ethical" move with her fan club will garner her shitloads of publicity.

If she had real ethics she would have rejected this dishonest sack of shit, whining, vomitous, paranoid, presumptous, mess of a song.

Edited to say: there is NOTHING patriotic about this song. NOTHING. Patriotic people worked to keep our troops out of this wretched, uneeded war. Patriotic people work now to stop the mis-use of our troops. Patriotic people strive for truth, not self-rightous ignorance.

If the writer had "Questions" about the war, WHY NOT ASK THEM in a song? Half the country-western audience DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT BUSH'S POLICIES ARE! Write a song to help keep our Marines from getting killed for Halliburton, Carlyle, etc,.

Now, THAT would be a patriotic song.

Boy, does this stuff make me mad. THE MARINES ARE DYING because you ain't asking the questions!

Want to be an artist, make a difference? Then let your audience know what your questions are.

15. Yes...
...the lyrics are stupid.

Her dad was in the Navy and her grandfather (grandpa) was on the beach at Normandy. So she honors them by putting a Marines sticker on her bumper? I don't get it.

20. The lady who flipped her off drives her kids to private school?
So a Republican security mom flipped off a marine wife in an SUV? That's all messed up.

How can this genre of music listeners (I'll refrain from using the term hick, as I was blasted on the DU yesterday for it) still come to the conclusion that Saddam was a threat? That Haliburton wasn't the largest benefactor of the war? That their sons and daughters aren't fighting for that precious black gold these (oh what the hell) hicks are using to drive their enormous fucking SUVs and F350s and Hummers?

Edit: I am not referring to southerners as hicks, only ignorant, uneducated, right wingers, blindly following their leaders and not asking questions regardless where they are from.

3. Now I feel inspired.........
Opening Lyrics from the song (according to article)

"I've got a bright red sticker on the back of my car Says United States Marines And yesterday a lady in a mini-van held up a middle finger at me Does she think she knows what I stand for Or the things that I believe Just by looking at a sticker for the US Marines On The Bumper Of My SUV"

Maybe Wright's just a shitty driver,
an out and out liar,
or a combination of the two.

If you're career's taking a diver,
the easy road's not often the higher,
Your credibility as an artist's been torn in two

December 7, 2004
A base spokesman said 269 Marines from Pendleton have been killed in Iraq. That's more than 20 percent of all deaths in the conflict.
This weekend, Bush plans to visit the wounded at a suburban Washington hospital, his second such visit in a month.

8. And I think this sums it up.
"After Wright learned that The Tennessean intended to publish an article about the campaign in today's newspaper, she issued a statement saying that she had dismissed Chuck Walter, a longtime friend who has headed her fan club since 1996."

Hi-fives for all if the liberal media hadn't caught us. They did so let us spin this. Did chuck resign to spend time with his family and make awesome Christian babies?

12. Chely Wright is a prime example of why Country sux
Pretty face, desperately trying to be somebunny in Nash Vegas. But she's gettin' older now, so time for the requisite nauseating song to bring in the $$$$$ and salvage a dying career.

"But, it means something to all the little people!"

I rarely listen to Repuke Cuntry anymore. Same 10 dead songs crammed down your ears over and over and over.

Hank Williams' ghost gave up on Nash Vegas years ago. He's hanging with the indie artists now.

13. How about a song about lack of armor for our troops?
Marines are DYING and someone gave you the finger? Boo Hoo.

Self-absorbed divisive shit. Un-fricking-believable.

Where's the shame, where's the decency, and finally, where is any real support for our troops and our country in these kinds of so-called patriotic ditties?
