Gunmen Kill Professor of Medicine in Baghdad

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041225/wl_nm/iraq_dean_dc&cid=574&ncid=1480

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Gunmen shot dead a respected professor of medicine in Iraq (news - web sites) on Saturday, the latest victim of postwar violence that has forced thousands of professionals to flee the country.

Hassan al-Rubaiei, 45, was driving along the western bank of the Tigris when gunmen pulled alongside and sprayed his car with automatic gunfire. His wife was in the passenger seat and escaped unhurt.

"He died from two bullets to the head," Dr Saeed Hassan of the Yarmouk hospital said.

Police had earlier identified Rubaiei as the dean of the school of dentistry, but his colleagues said he was a member of the faculty of medicine. He had been instrumental in maintaining academic standards, they said.

Rubaiei's relatives and colleagues rushed to Yarmouk, Baghdad's main trauma center, where the body was taken. Weeping at the loss of a man they described as completely apolitical, they wondered what motive any one could have had for killing him.

"Professor Hassan was a lovely man. I saw him earlier this morning. He was working on securing extra heaters for the classrooms," a doctor who knew Rubaiei said.

... more good news. :(

3. Well yes - and they are part of the intellectual elite. Also
being confronted with the victims every day they also speak out most strongly against the American attacks. Moreover a people that has no doctors left will have to give up sooner or later - maybe that is the reasoning, I don't know. If this is what the Bushistas are thinking they are wrong, though. Iraqis won't give up.

when they take over. They might ask questions about the new mullah's theocracy or why the insurgents kill anyone who thinks differently.

Our wonderful foreign policy at work.

No wonder they hate US.
I'd hate US, too.
I'd fight against US.

12. That's right. Even though that particular hospital - the largest -
was not in the middle of the city but away tucked into the riverbend in the west of the city. That hit CANNOT have been a mistake. At least one more hospital inside of Fallujah followed shortly afterwards.

10. A place of higher learning for the paid assassins of America
Fifteen people crossed onto Fort Benning on Sunday, November 21 and were arrested in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience, many negotiating a 10-foot-high barbed-wire fence to enter the base. They took this action despite knowing they likely face 3-6 months in federal prison. Since protests against the SOA/ WHINSEC began fourteen years ago, more than 170 people have served prison sentences of up to 2 years for civil disobedience.

15. Operation Phoenix
In March 1965, US troops began pouring into Vietnam. Nine years of backing the French, another nine years of backing Diem and two more years of CIA operations had failed. From this point on, the US Army took over the war effort.

Since the Vietnamese people overwhelmingly supported their own National Liberation Front (the NLF, or "Viet Cong" as we called it), the Army began destroying villages, herding people into internment camps, weeding out the leaders and turning the countryside into a "free-fire zone" (in other words, shoot anything that moves).

"Operation Phoenix was an assassination program plain and simple. The idea was to cripple the NLF by killing influential people like mayors, teachers, doctors, tax collectors-anyone who aided the functioning of the NLF's parallel government in the South."
