Cuba reaches goal of 2million tourists in '04
Cuba reaches goal of 2M tourists in '04
http://www.dailystar.com/dailystar/news/54239.php
HAVANA - Cuba's tourism minister said Sunday that 2 million people had visited the Caribbean island so far this year, achieving a long-sought-after goal despite U.S. efforts to undermine the country's main foreign exchange earner.

"This year the U.S. government increased the unjust blockade imposed on our country and pledged to affect the unstoppable development of our industry," Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero said.

"These 2 million visitors represent an 8 percent increase over last year and are one more demonstration that Cuba is not alone," he added at a ceremony in eastern Holguin province, where one of the island's tourist resorts is located.

Tourism and related activities earned revenues of $2.1 billion in 2003, and those earnings increased 15 percent this year, Economy and Planning Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez said earlier in the week.

Most U.S. citizens are banned by their government from traveling to Cuba, and visits by Cuban-Americans are also restricted. Nevertheless, 200,000 people came from the United States last year, 130,000 of Cuban origin.

1. If you're in the US and want to
travel to Cuba you can come to Canada (still legal) and fly direct from Canada to Cuba - no one will ask any questions and the Cubans won't stamp your passport.

4. US Immigration won't know
If you travel to Canada and don't tell them you are going on to Cuba. The Cubans certainly won't enforce that law.

5. The US & Canada have signed a travel itinerary agreement
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 12:39 PM by Mika
Americans departing from Canadian airports are required to fill out a travel itinerary form, which is shared with the US.

Of course Cuba doesn't have any such agreement with the US, and the Cuban government has been advocating legal US travel to Cuba for 40+ years.

8. I choose not to risk jail, fines and loss of professional license
There are very broad restrictions on Americans visiting Cuba, and even those have been tightened by Bush immediately prior to the election, as a way of sucking up to the elderly Cuban immigrants in Florida. I would love to visit Havana as a tourist, but as long as it remains illegal, I can't. At one point I was going to sign up for an annual humaitarian trip by Americans who were going to work on early childhood education programs (they had gone with State Dept. approval every year ) but Bush and his state department refused approval. My advice to anyone considering travel there is to contact the State Department and request the guidelines (or you can get them on line). DO NOT BELIEVE ANY TRAVEL OUTFITS WHO STAND TO PROFIT FROM YOUR BUSINESS. YOU are the one who can be fined and/or imprisoned.
