France and Germany Face Anger Over Deficits as Recession Grips Euro-Zone

STRESA, Italy (AP) - France and Germany faced mounting pressure Friday to cut their budget deficits as their smaller euro-zone partners feared the big two's expanding debt risks destabilizing the currency bloc.
"We cannot have divisions whereby some obey the rules and others don't, because in the end we'll all have to pay a price for that," said Austrian Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser.

3. That's a good alibi.

As long as France and Germany are "tied up" with their own domestic problems and "donor's fatigue", at least they have a very good excuse for not participating in this Mad Hatter's adventure.

They can see only too well that this little excursion is headed for disaster. The Germans are level-headed, sensible people. They know a bad deal when they see it.

Lucky for them that they have a very convenient 'out'.
