BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - A flare thrown from the audience ignited a packed Buenos Aires nightclub where locked exit doors trapped young New Year's revelers in smoke and flames, killing 175 people, officials said on Friday.

1. What a tragedy. . .
and completely unnecessary. Dear God, why would some lunatic in a crowded place like that throw any kind of a lit firework inside?

And to lock all of the exit doors is criminal negligence that I hope is prosecuted to the extent allowed under Argentinian law. It is understandable that the owner does not want people "sneaking in"--so then hire some security guards to watch the effing doors. You don't lock exit doors in a nightclub with over 2000 patrons inside. How greedy could you be not to spend some $$ on security?

2. it's amazing
and it sounds from what I read that the place was only supposed to hold a little over a thousand people, not the 4,000 or more that it held...also sounds like the owner was arrested though, thankfully.
