After disaster, Sri Lankan officials investigate reports of child rapes
After tsunami disaster, Sri Lankan officials investigate reports of child rapes

A teenager who escaped death but was left orphaned and homeless by the Asian tsunami met yet one more agony: gang rape, one of several cases of child abuse being investigated in the disaster zone, an official said.

Of all the human tragedies emerging from the worst natural disaster in decades, sexual abuse of vulnerable children in refugee camps must be among the most shocking.

De Silva gave few details of the case of the gang-raped 17-year-old girl, which occurred in the area of Galle on the southern coast but not in a refugee center. Hours after being washed ashore and left orphaned and homeless, she was raped by six men, he said.

Since Friday, two other cases of suspected abuse of children were reported, including one by a man who attempted to molest his granddaughter, de Silva said.

2. Where are the experts
on this one. Aren't all these people tramatized after this event. Rape is evil, but are people rational after such a catastrophe. I don't know the answers but do the psychiatrists or psychologists know what drives men after such an event. There have been similar rapes after hurricanes and earthquakes often in shelters.

5. trauma effect
This is not an excuse because that situation is inexcusable, but I recall reading (years ago) that heightened sexual aggression/activity is common after traumatic events. Sudden death, mass loss of life, etc.

9. Here's another article on Yahoo about it.
Group Warns of Possible Rape of Survivors

(snip)
The rights group, Women and Media Collective, urged stepped up protection for women and children who were more vulnerable after they were driven out of their homes by last week's tsunamis that killed more than 30,000 people.

"We have received reports of incidents of rape, rang rape, molestation and physical abuse of women and girls in the course of unsupervised rescue operations and while resident in temporary shelters," it said in a statement.

The group said the incidents were mainly in the southern region, but did not give details of the crimes nor did it say how many such cases had been reported to them.

However, the southern region police chief D.W. Prathapasinghe said there were "rumours" of rape, but they were yet to receive any complaint or any information that could help them to launch an investigation.
