The Persuit of Steven Hatfill
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 05:14 PM by dArKeR
Hatfill was always a little over the top. He once brandished a photo Bedlington considered "a little bit weird" -- an image of Hatfill in a biohazard suit pretending to cook up germs in a saucepan. Hatfill also described how easy it would be for a terrorist to enter the Pentagon in a wheelchair and spray a biological agent. Even so, Bedlington was impressed by Hatfill. He considered him a "superpatriot" committed to improving U.S. preparedness for a biological attack. He mentioned Hatfill to a CIA recruiter as an ideal candidate for a clandestine operations job.

After Hatfill's name surfaced in the anthrax case in the summer of 2002, Bedlington kept wondering: Did he really know this man as well as he thought? Curious, Bedlington finally sat down in the den of his Arlington condominium, typed Hatfill's name into a computer search engine and found a copy of his résumé.

How could you possibly write this story without mentioning Harp’s questionable past at Ruby Ridge?

I believe Harp is on this case to cover it up NOT to solve it.

Lost In Translation
Edmonds says that the supervisor, in an effort to slow her down, went so far as to erase completed translations from her FBI computer after she'd left work for the day.
“The next day I would come to work, turn on my computer and the work would be gone. The translation would be gone,” she says. “Then I had to start all over again and retranslate the same document. And I went to my supervisor and he said, ‘Consider it a lesson and don't talk about it to anybody else and don't mention it.’”

Fighting an FBI frame-up
An Earth First! member relates how she and Darryl Cherney were framed by the FBI for a car bombing that nearly killed them. Did The FBI Destroy Evidence?
The FBI and prosecutors ordered the destruction in 1999 of evidence from a bank robbery they once suspected linked Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh to white supremacists who were threatening before McVeigh's bombing to attack the government, documents show.
The evidence included a surveillance videotape of a bank robbery by some of the supremacists that occurred in Ohio five months before the bombing. The FBI lab compared the tape to pictures of McVeigh, but concluded a match was "inconclusive," internal memos show.

1. Not to hijack the thread but WP can't spell "pursuit?"
Dear WP,

If your editors can't find the spell checker, I am available for immediate employment.

3. NY Times headline spelled "pneumonia" "penumonia"
Last week in the print version of a story about pneumonia among soldiers in Iraq being caused by cigarette smoking. For the Times that's a collector's item.

I used to be a proofreader. The most common place to overlook a typo or misspelling is not in the body of text but in titles, chapter headings, headlines, etc., especially because they are usually written by an editor and aren't run through a spell checker.

4. That doesn't sound right. Why wouldn't it be run through a spell checker?
They most likely use Word and the report is just a .doc!

5. Headlines are often added at the last minute
Just as a story goes to press. Often the headline changes several times. I get the Times, for example, and the print headline is often different from the online version. I guess they think when the message is short it's not worth double-checking. It's the old adage: things often hide in plain sight. Sometimes I've found more typos in a cover page, words like "copyright", than in the whole rest of a book.

6. Well, This One Does the Title AND the Body
& I wasn't looking for this:

"Patrick, who retired in 1986 and became a biowarfare consultant, lives a few miles from Fort Detrick in a sprawling rancher."

He lives in a sprawling rancher, eh.

But excellent and much work in the original post.

not Urbanetti. So, did Hatfield get his Cipro from Urbanetti, or did the WP screw up and misname Lundgren?

10. I don't know whether Hatfill did it or not...
but I think the FBI has persecuted him unmercifully and unconstitutionally. Publicizing a man as a "person of interest" is a smear, since the FBI doesn't have enough evidence to indict. A resume/work history is not a reason to smear a man whoi is probably innocent. It is an unconstitutional abuse of Justice Department powers.
