UPDATED: 5:17 pm CST January 12, 2005

DES MOINES, Iowa -- An Iowa Man was indicted in federal court Wednesday for trying to smuggle nuclear equipment into his native Iran from his home in Cambridge, Iowa.

Mohammad Farahbakhsh, 43, has homes in Los Angeles and Cambridge.

A police raid in October turned up computer evidence that showed Farahbakhsh sent pressure sensors and other equipment overseas to Iran.

1. First the bathroom story and now this
What a shitty day for Iowa.

As a side note, to me Iowa seems pretty Wonder Bread white. Most non-white people are quite a novelty (at least in my town).

5. I don't know if you can mention specific towns here
Mine is by Iowa city and about 40% Latino. Not too white bread. Very Democratic. Lot of small towns with meat packing have had a huge influx of Latino, eg - Perry, Fort Dodge, Columbus Junction etc.
Where is Cambridge?

7. Cambridge Iowa is North of Des Moines, and just South of Ames.
Off of Interstate 35.

9. Cambridge is a few miles off I-35, between DM and Ames
As I was writing that, I started thinking about Sioux City, Iowa City, Waterloo and a few other towns which do have a good mix of culture. That's why I added the last part about it being that way in my town.

For example, a couple of years ago I took my two daughters and we traveled into Oklahoma to visit family. We stopped at a Sonic Drive-In where a black youth group was bussing cars as a fundraiser. We stopped at car wash where another very dark skinned man scrubbed our windshield. You get the idea... My oldest daughter looked at me and asked, "Momma, did you grow up in a black town?"

She just was not accustomed to seeing so many variations of skin tone.

4. uuhhh what crime?
a pressure sensor? This is getting all a bit silly. Gosh i hope they
have more serious evidence that this. A pressure sensor can be used
for an awful lot of things that have nothing to do with nuclear stuff.

He's innocent until proven guilty and the government that lies ALL
the time has made no case except a wooly unsupported allegation.

But, if you are aware of that "known area of prostition" in Cedar Rapids, you've got to tell me where it is. ;)

13. I live a few miles from Cambridge..
Wow, lots of exciting news coming from Iowa today!

I wonder how they caught this guy from Cambridge? They must target certain people and then open their mail? Scary.

As for "known areas of prostitution in Cedar Rapids"--ya got me on that one. I grew up there and I didn't know about any "known areas".

As for diversity--Iowa City is wonderful. The city is a cultural feast of art, music and events. Cedar Rapids is about as white as it gets. Des Moines is pretty eclectic and growing more so. And it sounds like Cambridge is now a bastion of terrorism. Great. <sarcasm>

Regardless, the people of Iowa are some of the kindest, warmest people in the world. I quit jogging along the highways, because every 3 minutes, a concerned motorist would stop and ask me if I needed a ride somewhere! :)

17. Known Areas of Prostitution
I don't know about Cedar Rapids. I live closer to Davenport where the QC Times now and then mentions some street or other downtown that is "under surveillance." Then all is OK for awhile until some other area, again downtown, is being scrutinized. And a few warning arrests again are made. It goes on and on. I wonder why they never find any hookers over on the Illinois side.

longer than the story. Curious.

16. I think I have a pressure sensor in my bathroom (I call it a scale)
That term could cover a lot of ground. It is true, you always have to wonder if a new "invasion product" is being rolled out.

...what exactly is a "pressure sensor" and how is it used to make a nuclear bomb?

Does Iran not have "pressure sensors"?

19. "pressure sensor"
I also have a few--called barometers--in my house/yard.

This just is meant to keep the pressure simmering...
