Dems Tell Bush To Lay Off Gays
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 02:49 PM by dwickham
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/01/011405bushDNC.htm

The Democratic Party launched a petition Friday telling the White House not to push for a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

The DNC in its Pride at the Polls newsletter to more than 100,000 party supporters calls on President Bush to abandon his call for the amendment and to tell House Majority Leader Tom Delay to " stop discriminating against Americans."

DeLay (R-Texas) has made it clear that it's at the top of the Republican legislative agenda, warning, "We will come back and come back until this is passed." (story)

oh my gods--someone has developed a backbone at the DNC

here's the link to the petition

Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 09:38 PM by Mojambo
And if the Republicans attempt to re-write the rules, take EVERY measure (lawful or not) to stop them. If those rules fall, the Democrats should refuse to show up, or better yet show up and physically take action.

The pure realization of fascism is precariuosly close. I now require the few remaining representatives I have to act as though they see the danger too. State sponsored propaganda everywhere, government agencies being cleansed of dissent, rampant nationalism and social conservatism, and perpetual warfare. These are becoming desperate times...

I don't think the majority of the Democratic party "gets" how close we are to boiling over into a fascist superpower.

The bully is going to be hitting harder, and soon.

13. This makes me lose more faith in the Dem party
Why? Because this action should have been taken BEFORE the election. It's been a year since Bush* launched his Gay Bashing Ammendment. By waiting until now, when the Repubs no longer need the Ammendment charge to steel their base, the Dems tacitly endorse this tactic.

It's a crying shame.

22. Actually, since they don't think people are born gay...
...they probably subscribe to the ridiculous notion that bisexuals (like myself) don't actually exist, and are just "eager for attention" or "trying to stand out" and "have our cake and eat it too".

Sadly, I've even heard that tripe from some DEMS - and gay men! - I know...

35. LOL, they "speak" and that's ALL they do
Unfortunately, as usual, they are very short on action. They could have mustered up about 2 or 3 moderate repugs and passed some of many, many pieces of LGBT legislation when they had 49-51 in the senate. Even if they lost it would have been admirable and showed they had some spine. If they EVER did things like that they wouldn't be in the minority because more people would vote for them.

But they don't have any spine. And they got con lite (aka DLC) running things anyway. Sucks, but there you have it.

31. Yes, the Dems took a stand at some point, but that's not the point
The point is that they allowed Bush* to use this issue in spite of the fact that it is extremely unpopular. Did they hold his feet to the fire? I don't believe so. The Dems have (mostly) been enablers for Bush*, not opponents. This is my opinion.

PS - Why do you find the need to insult me and my education level so quickly? Did you consider that maybe I know more about this issue than you do? I suggest a more reasoned approach to dialogue than insults. I'm happy to be proven wrong and admit my mistakes when they occur. However, my statement was that my diminished faith in the Dems is furthered by their soft responses to hard issues. Noone has shown me otherwise, though I'd be happy to entertain any proof you have to offer that the Dems have faught hard for my rights as a gay american to be treated equally. The progress we've made has come from grassroots efforts and a changed environment in the national media (i.e. Ellen, Will & Grace, Queer Eye, etc.) mostly.

I guess it's good news since I was beginning to assume the dnc was going to turn against gays altogether, adopt a republican agenda, and make me go green even though they don't have a chance in hades of winning.

Thanks dnc you slow-to-act-hide-your-head-in-the-sand-republican-bootlicking-jerks. Give me hope in you and string me along a little further.

30. He will.. He has "used" the issue enough for now.. It's back on the shelf
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 05:59 PM by SoCalDem
For now.. When it's time for the '06 elections, they'll dust it off, and start whipping up the frenzy again..

Their trusty old issues get trotted out every election, and their faithful fall for it over and over and over.

They never want to "solve" their GAGG issues, because it's their "bloody shirt" that must be waved every election to fire up the "base"..(and they are the "basest" people on earth)

gays
abortion
guns
god

The issues for democrats are too cerebral, and there's no bloody shirt to wave

healthcare
retirement benefits
good jobs
decent schools
clean water & air
affordable and clean energy

These are not "bloody-shirt" issues, and require more than a 30 second soundbyte screamed out as they "cut to commercial"

42. I think they will "talk" about it, but in order to have the issue for next
time, they cannot "resolve" it....ever ..

There is nothing "in it" for them now that they actually HAVE the votes.. A few months before the next election they will promise to "fix it" again....and so on and so on..

In fact there will probably be a new flurry of ballot initiatives to make sure the faithful turn out again.

43. They Can Always Go Further
If they ban gay marriage this year,
they'll be campaigning for sodomy laws in the next election.

If they overturn Roe v. Wade this year,
they'll be going for a national ban next time,
or they'll go after birth control.

They own the voting machinez. There are no limits.

33. A case of too little, too late
Where was the DNC when 11 states voted to approved anti-gay marriage laws in November? Where were they when my state (Missouri) passed a similar measure in August?

For the first time in years I voted a split ticket in November because I was so disgusted at the way some Missouri Democrats ran from the gay marriage issue in August, then came slinking back asking for our votes in November and saying what a shame it was that the marriage law was passed.

Frankly, it appears that the DNC is now trying the same thing. I hope they come around asking for money because I'll love the chance to tell them they can count on donations from me when I can count on action from them ... and not just a little sympathy after the fact.

The Dems need to hire lawyer Randy New of Atlanta, a gay rights activist (and my brother's partner), to kick some ass for them. They won't kick said ass. Randy will. He is the guy suing the Druid Hills Country Club. I love Randy like a brother. In fact, my parents now love him. Since the "outing" with this Druid Hills Country Club thing, my parents have rallied around my brother and his great partner. Randy said he knew he was "in the family" when there was an envelope ($$$) for him under the Christmas tree this year, from old "Dr. T." God bless my old, tolerant parents.
