U.S. Mulls Annual Cash Payout for All Iraqis
U.S. Mulls Annual Cash Payout for All Iraqis
Sun July 13, 2003 07:11 AM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States is considering paying all Iraqis an annual dividend from a trust fund established with the country's oil revenues, U.S. administrator Paul Bremer said on Sunday.
In an article in The New York Times marking the first meeting of Iraq's governing council in Baghdad, Bremer said the United States planned economic reforms for Iraq that entailed "a major shift of capital from the value-destroying state sector to private firms."

"We are also creating a social safety net for any resulting disruptions," he said, adding that every Iraqi should benefit from the country's oil wealth.

"One possibility would be to pay social benefits from a trust financed by oil revenues," he said. "Another could be to pay an annual cash dividend directly to each citizen from that trust."

2. why didn't they do that in Afghanistan?
They allow the drug trade to start back up but they let the warlords keep the money? Hmm. I'd like to know what cut the CIA is getting out of the opium biz.

5. Iron ricebowl--

gotta love it! The great American dream--a guaranteed annual income.
All kidding aside, it can never pay for lives on both sides lost
and a country turned into ash--for Oil.

6. Uh... Why not do that HERE????
Can you imagine how much help that would be for the truly poor people who are working 2 and 3 shit jobs, trying to keep a roof over their heads?? Maybe they would be able to give up ONE of those shit jobs, and actually have a little time for those "family values" kind of things..

It's only fair, really.. In a rich country, why shouldn't the people expect to share in the wealth??

I firmly believe that if EVERYONE in the US could go to a doctor when they were sick, could make enough to be above the poverty level, could afford food AND shelter, and could be assured that THEIR kids could afford college, things would be so much nicer here at home, and maybe our leaders would not be so eager to start shit all over the world, if they did not have all that "extra" cash burning a hole in their holsters:)

7. Annual?!?!
That's sounds to me like we're going to be there a while.

Either that or they really think they can just set up a nice little Iraqi Constitution and walk away.
