Report: U.S. can't win Iraq war

(snip)

Among factors cited:

-- U.S. military fatalities from hostile acts rose from an average of about 17 per month in May 2003 to a current average of 82 per month;

-- The average number of U.S. soldiers wounded by hostile acts per month has spiraled from 142 to 808 during the same period;

-- Attacks on the U.S.-led coalition since November 2003 rose from 735 a month to 2,400 in October;

-- The average number of mass-casualty bombings has grown from zero in the first few months of the U.S.-led occupation to an average of 13 per month; and

-- Electricity production has been below prewar levels since October.

"All the trend lines we can identify are all in the wrong direction," said Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution, a Washington policy research organization.

4. Hey ? .... sounds like a good time to invade Iran and Syria ....
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 11:22 AM by Trajan
So we can be JUST as successful, against a STRONGER 'foe' ...

I swear .... This US administration is imbued with the same fanatical, wild-eyed stridency of the Likud .... pure and simple: The WH has become a de facto extension of Likud militarism, with Likud's target list ....

9. Creating chaos is part of their plan to rule the world.
Divide those parts of the world not under our control; wage economic ruin; then, conquer and control. Neofascistimperialism.

13. Seems like there may be a twisted logic to all of this.
Once we have an acceptable puppet government in Iraq, what do we care if the country continues to be engulfed in death and terror. We'll have our hands on the oil fields and if every last Iraqi citizen dies of disease or ongoing violence, leaving that entire geographical area nothing but a vast desert wasteland, well, so much the better. Because our ONLY focus is to further enrich Dickwad Cheney and his thugs by stealing every last drop of Iraqi oil.

<Whew> Once that's over, we can proceed on to Iran and fuck up that country beyond repair.

Onward Christian Soldiers, Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus, Going on before.
Christ the royal Master,Leads against the foe,
Forward into battle, see His banners go.

And to think I used to sing this in Sunday School. :puke:

I am sickened by this evil cabal and their Christo-fascist bullshit!

Cursed be their names unto all eternity!

5. There are other articles besides this one on the subject
Other papers are running the same thing. This is not looking good for Bush now. He is also scrapping the "Coalition of the Willing". This is falling apart.

US and UK look for early way out of Iraq

Ewen MacAskill, Richard Norton-Taylor and Rory McCarthy in Baghdad
Saturday January 22, 2005
The Guardian

Private memos are circulating in Washington, Baghdad and London setting out detailed scenarios for withdrawal of US and British forces from Iraq as early as possible, a Foreign Office source said yesterday.
The policy papers have added urgency because a new Iraq government, to be elected next week if the election goes ahead on January 30 as planned, could set a target date for withdrawal.

John Negroponte, US ambassador to Baghdad, confirmed that a United Nations resolution declared that US and other forces would have to leave if requested by the Iraqi government. "If that's the wish of the government of Iraq, we will comply with those wishes. But no, we haven't been approached on this issue - although obviously we stand prepared to engage the future government on any issue concerning our presence here."

19. I am reading a book 'Terrorism and Liberalism'....
...by Paul Berman (not that I am in agreement with him) and between the article you linked to, the ideas in the Berman book and the cold reality of the situation. The war in Iraq may very well be one of the worst strategic decisions in 'World' history. The US is completely clueless.

15. You do know the article probably is not
what the WT agrees with, and can plausibly be taken as a "look at what those barking moonbats in the liberal MSM are spewing" article.

It's possible for a freeper thread to summarize some DU postings without and still not agree with them.
