Weird ailment cripples girls - Malawi Africa
A mysterious disease has struck 50 schoolgirls in southern Malawi, weakening their limbs and making them unable to walk, a local health official said on Sunday.

"All the victims are reporting weakness of limbs and joints and are unable to walk or use their hands," said Noor Alide, the health officer in Chikwawa district.

Forty girls from Saint Lawrence, a Roman Catholic secondary school, were admitted to the district hospital two weeks ago, and 10 more on Sunday. Alide said four of those admitted on Sunday were in serious condition.

The girls are able to speak and are not in pain, he said, adding that the students may be suffering hysteria, a mental disorder that may involve disturbances of sensory and motor functions.

10. Or another toxin @ the school
"The girls felt better after being sent home, but the symptoms returned when they went back to school, he (Noor Alide) added."
Its defiantly something at the school, maybe a toxin of some sort.
But hysteria kinda fits, too. I mean, if you really hate school your mind can make you sick.

3. Kuru?
This reminds me of the Kuru epidemic in Papua New Guinea. Of course, that was caused by cannibalism, and I don't know if it is practiced where these girls are. Definitely sounds like a prion-related condition though, from the symptoms.

And for your info, there are as many hysterical males than females. Maybe even more nowadays.
