Venezuela rally over rebel arrest
Thousands of Venezuelan government supporters have held a protest march against Colombia in Caracas, as a row between the two neighbours intensifies. The demonstrators demanded respect for Venezuelan sovereignty, after Colombia admitted it had paid for the capture of a rebel leader on Venezuelan soil.

They also condemned the US, which the Venezuelan government blames for its diplomatic row with Colombia. Venezuela has recalled its ambassador in Bogota and frozen economic ties. The protesters chanted pro-Chavez slogans and carried banners that read "Bush: Venezuela Is Not Iraq!" and "Colombia, Stay Out of Venezuela".

The government supporters danced to traditional music that boomed from loudspeakers on trucks, the Associated Press news agency. The protest followed an admission by Colombia - a US ally - that it had paid bounty hunters to capture Rodrigo Granda, a senior Farc rebel leader, in Caracas in December.

Apology demand

Mr Chavez has accused the US of being responsible for the kidnap, by putting pressure on Colombia to isolate Venezuela. "This provocation came from Washington, it is the latest attempt by the imperialists ... to ruin our relations with Colombia," he said on Sunday. As well as recalling its envoy to Colombia over the capture, Venezuela has demanded an apology and suspended economic ties.

1. So this is the next way they're trying to take down Chavez
Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 08:29 PM by TroubleMan
There going to get Columbia to start a war. Then we'll have some stupid excuse to "jump in" and help Columbia.

(on edit)

What the really scary scenario is on this is that if we jump in on Columbia's side, then possibly China or the EU might help out Venezuala. That's a mess I'm not looking forward to.

2. Hey I'm waiting for the obligatory "Dictator" comments about...
Chavez, that I'm sure will come, any minute now. Hell, I would venture so far as to say, yes this is the perfect opportunity for the US to use Colombia as yet another proxy for war. We are pretty good at doing that, aren't we?

9. What would U.S. State Dept. do without Colombia?
Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 08:45 PM by FlemingsGhost
Castro (Cuba) to the north.

Chavez (Venezuela) to the east.

"Lula" (Brazil) and now the immergence of Morales (Bolivia) to the south.

How firm is our hold on Colombia, anyway? I know we are knee-deep in the drug trade, but are those ventures enough to stop a leftist movement throughout South America?

10. Hey you forgot one...
Nestor Kirchner over in Argentina is stirring up the pot as well...

http://www.counterpunch.org/burbach12302004.html

Argentina Squares Off with International Financiers

"Kirchner became president in May, 2003. At his inauguration he strongly criticized the neo-liberal economic policies of his predecessors, blaming their slavish adherence to the IMF's rigid structural adjustment policies for the country's dire economic conditions. He also demanded that privatization contracts for public utilities imposed on the country be renegotiated, and declared it is the responsibility of the state to 'introduce equality where the market excludes and abandons'."

and Argentina's economing is rebounding inspite of thumbing their nose at the IMF...

I would love to see this 'domino effect' take place...

13. I was watching part of a C-Span rerun of the second day of Condi
Rice before the Senate committee and Bill Nelson, a Dem from Florida, was warning Rice that the US must keep an eye on Venezuela. I was appalled and disgusted. What kind of Dem is Nelson anyway?

14. He's a very centrist Dem
Here in Florida most Dems don't care for him much but unless he gets a strong challenger in the primary we'll keep holding our nose and voting for him come time for the general. What choice is there?

15. I read that the Cuban mafia in Florida
want Chavez's socialist policies to fail. They are dumping tons of lobbyist money in all the Florida politicos pockets.
