JACK Straw will today seek to steer America away from considering military action against Iran when he meets Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state. The foreign secretary has drawn up a 200-page dossier, which makes the case against military strikes but argues for a "negotiated solution" to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapons programme.
However, bellicose noises are coming out of the US capital.
Last week, Condoleezza Rice labelled Iran an "outpost of tyranny" and said: "It's really hard to find common ground with a government that thinks Israel should be extinguished."
George W Bush made clear US military action against Iran over its nuclear programme had not been ruled out.
Meanwhile, Dick Cheney, the vice-president, said Iran was placed "right at the top of the list" of world trouble-spots.
