National 'No Name-Calling' Week Irks Conservatives
Despite Gripes About Gay Themes, Observance Spreads Nationally

POSTED: 10:25 pm EST January 23, 2005
UPDATED: 10:33 pm EST January 23, 2005

NEW YORK -- Using a young readers' novel called "The Misfits" as its centerpiece, middle schools nationwide will participate in a "No Name-Calling Week" initiative starting Monday. The program, now in its second year, has the backing of groups from the Girl Scouts to Amnesty International but has also drawn complaints that it overemphasizes harassment of gay youths.

The initiative was developed by the New York-based Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, which seeks to ensure that schools safely accommodate students of all sexual orientations. GLSEN worked with James Howe, the openly gay author of "The Misfits" and many other popular children's books.

snip...
"No Name-calling Week" takes aim at insults of all kinds - whether based on a child's appearance, background or behavior. But a handful of conservative critics have zeroed in on the references to harassment based on sexual orientation.

"I hope schools will realize it's less an exercise in tolerance than a platform for liberal groups to promote their pan-sexual agenda," said Robert Knight, director of Concerned Women for America's Culture and Family Institute.

7. My husband has a "pot" belly. Does that count as pan-sex?
So what's a difference in a pot and a pan? Is it merely the handle?

Get a handle on a pot and you have a pan??? In that case, I could have pan sex then!

43. The difference between a pot and a pan is
that a pan is shallow and a pot is deep. (I would suspect the dividing line would be about a 1:1 aspect ratio of height / width.)

But I wouldn't recommend sex with either.

13.  I love double speak....
"Schools should be steering kids away from identifying as gay," Knight said. "You can teach civility to kids and tell them every child is valued without conveying the message that failure to accept homosexuality as normal is a sign of bigotry."

she almost was correct. I guess it's cool for her to have thousands of kids calling people hateful names like "fag" and not understanding how that is not a good thing.

Of course, this will get swept up with the "evils of being P.C." by the ditto heads, just you wait. They don't like it when someone doesn't let them call a spade a spade, so to speak and cannot comprehend how it could bother someone.

111. yes, redefining what is a bigot to not include screaming
faggot at a kid in the hallway as hate speech is pretty fucking subhuman.

Kids don't care who thinks that being gay is immoral - kids just are what they are. When an authority figure tells a kid that their very existence is immoral and "disapproves" of what they are, that kid gets a very different message about their identity and their self-worth. If your kid was told everyday by everybody he or she knows that they were a defective immoral human being because they had green eyes it couldn't be more absurd. And when parents lead the charge to make it okay for their own kids to torment gay kids, it's bordering on criminal.

How could anyone be so cruel to a child, especially about sexual identity, and claim to be "moral"!

45. "gynophobia" "homophobia" "toleranceaphobia"...pretty much sums it up.
these guys are afraid of EVERYTHING.

I'm reminded of the movie "Defending your life", in which Rip Torn, acting as Albert Brooks' "lawyer" points out that humans spend much of their lives groping through a fog of fear. Only those who reach beyond it get to move on in the spiritual plane.
If so, I think conservatives will be forced to repeat this plane until their ears bleed.

Is what I call them. I've been keeping an eye on CWFA for years and out of the fundie groups they are a real piece of work. Before AAR came out I used to listen to their radio show to see what they were up too, and they were totally obsessed with porn and gays. (gay porn?)

I mean to the point where they had a woman whose sole job it was to watch porn all day and "get outraged". My friends and I used to joke around, one day we'd all dress up like fundies and apply for the porn watching job. :P

88. O.K., that calls for some Tom Lehrer!
National Brotherhood Week

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks.
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek.
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise,
As long as you don't let 'em in your school.

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It's American as apple pie.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'cause it's very chic.
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand.
You can tolerate him if you try.

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
It's National Everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood Week.
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you.
It's only for a week, so have no fear.
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

40. CWFA has quite a history.
In 1978, Beverly LaHaye watched a television interview of Betty Friedan, founder of the National Organization for Women. Realizing that Friedan claimed to speak for the women of America, Beverly LaHaye was stirred to action. She knew the feminists' anti-God, anti-family rhetoric did not represent her beliefs, nor those of the vast majority of women.

The first meeting to educate and alert Christian women on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), led by Beverly LaHaye, occurred in San Diego, California. More than 1,200 attended. This was the springboard to beginning Concerned Women for America as a national organization.

www.cwfa.org/history.asp

Beverly LaHaye is married to Tim LaHaye, co-author of the "Left Behind" series. Both are Bob Jones University alumni & powers in the Dominionist movement. Check out CWFA & subsidiary sites for "news" stories soon to be parroted in letters to the editor & reviewed on Fox News.

41. Thank you for the link.
and in 1979, they were offended by President Carter's 'International Year of the Child' and added that to fighting the ERA:

>Concerned Women for America became officially incorporated in January. CWA's first newsletter and word-of-mouth communication quickly spread word of the new organization.

Very shortly, CWA leaders realized that we were in a struggle against spiritual forces of darkness, and we needed a strong foundation of prayer support. They organized our membership into powerful prayer chapters and privided regular concerns for prayer. CWA would not have survived without the quiet strength of prayer.

President Jimmy Carter named 1979 as The International Year of the Child. CWA began an immediate campaign to expose this United Nations strategy to "nationalize" all children of the world.<

and the list goes on, year after year. Does anything actually meet their approval?

73. National No Psy-Ops Propaganda Framing Week rejected by CIA front group.
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 01:39 PM by JohnOneillsMemory
(The neo-con campaign to discredit evidence/science/facts continues by portraying 'tolerance' of gays as a form of intolerance. More interesting excerpts below with a cogent point from a mother who's son died from bullying: focus on the bully, not the victim to avoid even more psy-ops confusion.-JOM)

>snip<

One of GLSEN's most persistent critics is Warren Throckmorton, director of counseling at Grove City College, a Christian school outside Pittsburgh. His skeptical comments about "No Name-Calling Week" have been widely circulated this month on conservative Web sites.

"There's no question middle school can be a difficult place - I'm not advocating that any group gets mistreated," Throckmorton said in a telephone interview.

"But it will definitely make traditionally oriented teachers and parents and kids feel very uncomfortable, if they happen to object to homosexuality on moral grounds," he said of GLSEN's program. "If you disagree, you're hateful, you're bigoted, you're a homophobe. They're using name-calling to combat name-calling."

Another critic is Brenda High of Pasco, Wash., an anti-bullying activist since her 13-year-old son committed suicide in 1998 following harassment at school.

"The use of 'The Misfits' as a basis for this teaching puts the emphasis on the subgroup of the harassment victim instead of on the perpetrator of harassment - the bully," she said.

But Howe said critics of "No Name-Calling Week" seem reluctant to acknowledge the scope of anti-gay harassment in schools.

"Homosexuality is not a moral issue - it's a fact, and kids who are gay, or maybe just different, need to be allowed to grow up in a safe environment just like everybody else," he said.

if we lash out at them, we hate America, we're unpatriotic, we're siding with the terrorists, we're against God and nature...

but... if they promote a climate of hatred- in God's name- that should be acceptable because they are, indeed, God's mouthpiece on the planet?

I agree with Kinber Scott, let them hang themselves with their own rope of stupidity. Slowly, it will start to dawn on the American people that these guys want to drive anyone who is different than them out of society and probably even out of this country.

102. A name is a crutch
It is more for the person using it than the person its pasted on (this applies in all cases by the way, no matter if you think the name or words are good or bad). But you can own your own weakness, just listen to the song.

I GOT A NAME
(LYRICS)

Like the pine trees linin’ the windin’ road
I’ve got a name, I’ve got a name
Like the singin’ bird and the croakin’ toad
I’ve got a name, I’ve got a name
And I carry it with me like my daddy did
But I’m livin’ the dream that he kept hid
Movin’ me down the highway
Rollin’ me down the highway
Movin’ ahead so life won’t pass me by

Like the north wind whistlin’ down the sky
I’ve got a song, I’ve got a song
Like the whippoorwill and the baby’s cry
I’ve got a song, I’ve got a song
And I carry it with me and I sing it loud
If it gets me nowhere, I’ll go there proud
Movin’ me down the highway
Rollin’ me down the highway
Movin’ ahead so life won’t pass me by

And I’m gonna go there free
Like the fool I am and I’ll always be
I’ve got a dream, I’ve got a dream
They can change their minds but they can’t change me
I’ve got a dream, I’ve got a dream
Oh, I know I could share it if you want me to
If you’re going my way, I’ll go with you
Movin’ me down the highway
Rollin’ me down the highway
Movin’ ahead so life won’t pass me by

those who are interested in more than just a lifelong monogamous dyadic heterosexual relationship. Basically, it encompasses bisexuals, gayfolx, transgenders, intersexed people, leatherfolk, the poly community, swingers, and a whole raft of other stuff that the zealots are horrified that consenting adults might do behind closed doors.

"pan" meaning "all".

If they think harassment of gay teens is "overemphasized" by those evil liberals, they have obviously never been a gay teen. In fact, they were probably the same people who constantly ridiculed them in school. Do these people have any idea of how many gay teens have been driven to suicide by the relentless mockery they are faced with at school every single day? Do they care? And no, kids should not be turned away from identifying themselves as WHAT THEY ARE. No one has to conform just because these pinheads don't like it, wtf does it matter if they like it or not? Who the fuck are they? We have to conceal our sexual identity so we won't offend one of their pompous asses?
