U.S. Military May Face Shortage of Troops
WASHINGTON - The strain of fighting a longer, bloodier war in Iraq (news - web sites) than U.S. commanders originally foresaw brings forth a question that most would have dismissed only a year ago: Is the military in danger of running out of reserve troops?

17. Good.
Here's hoping it's male, female, straight, gay, rich, poor, abled, and disabled.

Even better, I'd hope for a Universal Service Obligation, including Public Health Service, Peace Corps, VISTA, Forest Service, and all manner of peaceful 'bootstrap' support services.

2. "A question that most would have dismissed only a year ago"
Speaks volumes for control of the media, doesn't it? A lot of people have been watching the retention numbers, the troop levels and the recruiting numbers for the last two years, and some have been raising holy hell about the clear implications. But the questions raised couldn't get any column inches or air time in the mainstream media because the corrupt Bush administration was steadfastly declaring that troop levels were just fine, and ignore any indications or evidence to the contrary.

With the 2004 election safely tucked away in Little Hitler's suit pocket, we can now begin to examine these matters a little more objectively, and surprise surprise, the evidence has been there all along that we don't have enough men to do the job.

3. Well it's Clinton's fault for reducing troop numbers during his term.
I know that sounds ridiculous but that is what someone wrote in a LTTE in our newspaper about the shortage of troops.

Nothing about the last two years matters to these fools.

21. Yes it Clintons fault
In fact it's his fault that the navy is getting rid of 60,000 sailors by 2010 as has been reported in the navy times as recently as today. And it's also Presidents fault that the requirements to join the navy have gotten tougher such as 95 percent have to have a high school diploma, 5% higher then the DOD requirment. The navy is going to be a tough place to hid out during this draft!

8. We probably don't even need a draft
What we need is for Congress to lift the end-strength caps. Thanks to the poor economy, the military could probably use bonuses and other incentives to recruit all the people it needed.

15. The Military Will Be The Only Choice For Poor And Undereducated Folks...
... and for many more who find it difficult to find employment because of ethnic discrimination.

Our poor become cannon fodder for Bush's* vanity wars.

What is WRONG with those people?!

Are our leaders insane??

10. I can't imagine much US support for a draft...
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 04:43 PM by TwoSparkles
If a draft happens on Bush's watch, because of his failings and war mongering--mark that as one more strike against him.

American will not endure that. Not for this war. Not for these lies.

Anyone else see The McLaughlin group this weekend? Not one person spoke positively about Bush's inauguration speech. Pat Buchanan harshly criticized it, as did Tony Blankley. Eleanore Clift was superb. Some young woman from the Christian Science Monitor tried to stick up for the speech, but ended up agreeing with Buchanan and Blankley.

America will not stand for the far-reaching, extreme agenda that Bush is dishing up--and I imagine the draft will be wildly unpopular.

Let Bush go ahead with a draft. One more nail in the coffin.

Let America see what life is like when you give the sociopathic clowns all of the power.

18. If they need troops then there is Navy & Airforce that has them
they are going to have to take the brunt of this too. Its got to be all three forces... So far its just been the army ... and its not a nice place to fight and its getting bloodier and bloodier!!!

As far as I'm concerned We lost Iraq and somebody has to tell the Hawks they bankrupted us and destroyed our Military's moral

Its like Michael Moore said "We they ever trust us again?"

after this fiasco

No WAY!!!

20. You forgot the Marines
A lot of them have been fighting in Iraq. A lot of Air Force and Navy there as well. BTW, ground fighting is the Army's job (and to some extent the Marines); that's why they exist.
