State Democrats to lose leader (Texas)

AUSTIN – State Democratic Chairwoman Molly Beth Malcolm announced Tuesday she will resign after five years on the job, saying the long hours are costing too much time away from her family. ---

Following last year's election, in which the party's statewide candidates all lost and Republicans won a majority in the state House for the first time in a century, some in the party leadership sought Ms. Malcolm's ouster. ---

Other potential candidates include Mary Moore of Bryan, a certified public accountant and unsuccessful 1998 candidate for state Senate, and Charles Soechting, a San Marcos trial lawyer who is the party's general counsel.

Ms. Moore, who sought to replace Ms. Malcolm after last year's election losses, favors closer ties to national Democrats perceived as unpopular in Texas. ---

Texas Dems certainly didn't fare well in those 5 yrs Ms Malcolm was on the job.

Hopefully the next State Dem Chair can do a lot better at getting us organized and actually winning an election or two.

MBM has never won a race! Not one. Texas Democrats only fell under this leadership. Earlier this year after another total loss of all state offices and after she had already said she would be leaving the members of the Progressive Populist Caucus called on MBM to step down but she would not. Why? Because she had not secured her replacement.
MBM is leaving on the 25th. It is my understanding that the SDEC meeting is the 24th. Will MBM's replacement be chosen under her leadership before or as she goes? This selection time table MBM has set up insures there will be little or no debate from Texas Democrats. This means that Democrats will once again be stuck with a chair that has been pre-picked by the out going chair and the backroom folks that have supported her. Texas Democrats don't need an MBM clone to protect her losing staff in Austin.
Time for a change. Call your SDEC reps and tell them you want a real election. Charles Soechting, a San Marcos trial lawyer who is the party's general counsel is MBM handpicked replacement. This is why I don't want him! If we could turn Texas around we could change the world. Without Texas there would be no Bush. Under the leadership of a new chair, one that would work with grassroots activists, we could change Texas. This is our chance. If you would like more info send me mail.

She had support of the party leaders but the majority who work for candidates and for party issues saw her as an ineffective leader. She was even asked to resign after the 2002 election losses. This wasn't because Dems were beating the messenger, but rather because it was the final straw. I think Molly finally accepted that she is not the person who can turn the party around and help us take back this state.

I'd rather have some new blood and reorganize before the '04 election. And if we get a Molly Beth clone then we have to revolt against them as well.

We can not accept someone who thinks like the DLC. We can not beat bu$h with bu$h lite.
