Bush admits heavy casualties in Iraq are depressing Americans

US president says his country could not run away from its long-term aim of spreading freedom despite mounting US casualties in Iraq.

WASHINGTON - Facing the deadliest day for American forces since the invasion of Iraq 22 months ago, President George W. Bush acknowledged Wednesday that heavy US military casualties there were depressing his people.

"The story today is going to be very discouraging to the American people. I understand that. We value life. We weep and mourn when soldiers lose their life," Bush said at his first news conference of the year.

He spoke as reports from Baghdad indicated that more than 30 US troops were killed Wednesday in a helicopter crash and four more died in attacks, the biggest single loss of American life in the insurgency-wracked nation since the 2003 invasion.

More than 1,370 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the March 2003 US-led invasion that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, according to Pentagon figures released earlier this month.

6. He's ashamed of the war dead
That's why they unload the coffins at night, like so many UPS packages.

He's probably mad at them for making him look bad. I've noticed a lot of right wingers with the same attitude towards them.

48. "spreading freedom" sounds suspiciously like nation building
but I thought republicans were against that. When the f**k did we sign up for that? And we have to stay in Iraq until we win. Win what? How will we know when our new bouncing baby democracy is ready to be weaned? When they have rigged elections like ours? When they have senators with "concerns" and "reservations" who promote warmongering incompetents? I heard Sen. Dayton actually called Condi a liar. I heard Durbin use the phrase "goverment propaganda." And today we hear that maybe even republicans are starting to wake up. I'd like to feel hope, but it just seems like tokenism. "Here's a straw to grasp at while the military-industrial-media complex sucks the last life out of your country."

19. Iraqis get Valium cheap and no doctor's script needed..........
Bush better prepare for helping the troops of PTSD, it will be rampant among the troops. He wants to free the Iraqis, maybe he should step in an Iraqis' shoes for one day.

Hell, he should step in a widow, parent or child's shoes of his fallen troops for at least one day. Maybe he should tie his hands behind his back and see how easy it is to function with no arms.

Maybe he should step into Rumsfeld's 'you go to war with what you have' for a few days. :tinfoilhat:

"The story today is going to be very discouraging to the American people."

This may be the very first admission he/the administration has made that the people aren't largely supportive of the occupation. If he continues to make slips like this, soon people will begin to realize that we've blown it in Iraq.

Iraq and Afghanistan only make real time. Let the names be added day after day as the memorial grows larger and larger. Make a web site for it.

We need to keep the deaths in the face of Americans who support the war.

Until we can hear "how many kids have you killed today?"

51. No kidding!!
Iraq has never been "free" according to Bush's standards.

My great-great grandparents did ok without a free Iraq.

I don't recall my great-grandparents discussing the suffering they endured due to an un-free Iraq. My grandparents told me stories about the depression, but never discussed the trauma they experienced due to a Iraq's lack of freedom. Hmmmm...never heard my parents griping, "If only Iraq were free, dammit! Our lives would be so much better!".

Hey Chimp!! The world was just fine without a free Iraq! However, I don't know if the next generations will survive the economic, diplomatic and foreign-policy devastation that you've unleashed trying to free Iraq!

I weep and mourn over the loss of ALL LIVES in Iraq and Afghanistan, not just American soldiers.

I weep and mourn over the torture and rape, the gulags, and the horrors of our bombing campaigns. I weep over the loss of priceless antiquities destroyed by our troops.

Guess that's just more proof that I'm NOT one of "his people".

President says, 'I have firmly planted the flag of liberty'
Wednesday, January 26, 2005 Posted: 5:57 PM EST (2257 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Saying he has "firmly planted the flag of liberty," President Bush on Wednesday expounded upon themes put forth in last week's inaugural address, promising to pursue democracy in Iraq and elsewhere around the world.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/ALLPOLITICS/01/26/bush/index.html

He did it all by his lonesome. Egomania is now on the loose at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. This is starting to worry me more than a little bit. Does this clown really have access to nuclear weapons? Might want to put him on a lot shorter leash like locking him in a padded room.
