Meteor seen falling in Madrid suburb
Meteor seen falling in Madrid suburb

28/01/2005

A spectacular fireball meteor was seen falling in the neighbourhood of two Madrid airports, emergency services said today.

“We had three calls and are aware of other calls reporting a huge fireball before midnight,” said Luis Serrano of the emergency telephone service in Madrid.

Spanish press agency EFE also received calls reporting the falling object which was seen descending nearly vertically near the airports.

Barajas International Airport that services the Spanish capital is about 4.3 miles from Torrejon military air base.

8. If the latter ...
... was it expected (most of the big bits are tracked) or is it a
sign that the atmosphere is expanding everso slightly?

9. Hmmm
Does seem so, but we do acquire about a ton of space debris (mostly microscopic by the time it reaches the surface) every day. Could be we are moving through an area that something broke up in recently.

If it were big enough, it would be spotted, and we would have warning... that is, unless, it was coming from the direction of the sun... then we are screwed :)

3. Few weeks ago, reports of something seen and heard at edge of Jakarta
but I never saw any follow-up report. So many old satellites up there, wonder about decaying orbits. Also wonder if DOD has something they are testing instead of just talking about.

Any of you sky watchers have any info?

that chimp in the white house is about the farthest thing from God you can find, and he definitely wasn't "chosen" by God...he was chosen by a bunch of morons.

7. You sure you don't wanna blame Clinton?
I ask a serious question about a news report some weeks back and you make it into political satire? :eyes:

Maybe the next hunk of space junk with a decaying orbit will find its way to a neighborhood near you. You might take the problem seriously then?

I hear golbal warming is due to hot air from RW hate radio, but I think some other type of pollution might be more to blame.

10. Meteorites reports seem to be increasing lately.
Lot's of speculation why? Some large objects have been found recently and we have had a couple close calls. Maybe reporting is getting better or the population is more paranoid.

This most certainly has nothing to do with any political leaders, however, I have often wondered how they would handle this if they knew something large was coming our way. Maybe they would wreck the economy with irresponsible deficit spending, have a big party, throw a couple wars for diversion

11. You must've missed the ridiculous post I was responding to.
Yes, lots of hits and near hits of late. Are we just going through a part of the sky with more debris or are the old satellites' orbits decaying? Guess it could be both.

Lots more armature astronomers with decent equipment may account for the increased sightings. Hell, there's just lots more people to see things.

Is the 'Star Wars' platform working? Could they be zapping old stuff into manageable size pieces? Would rather have smaller chunks of old satellites raining down on us than hope they break up on their own in the atmosphere. I live in a area the policy makers consider to be virtually uninhabited. If I stop posting suddenly, would someone look into it? ;)

12. Yes I missed the post probably for the best.
In the last two months new objects have been found with uncertain trajectories.

I would have to look at links elsewhere but there are more reports.

One wild theory which makes me wonder is why a certain political party has totally abandoned desire to balance the budget. At the same time the opposition party allows them to do it without much complaint and weak comment. It almost sounds as if they are spending like there is no tomorrow, nor will there be consequences for their actions. Odd isn't it?
