Even before President Bush offers details of his plan to overhaul Social Security, Republicans in Congress are being flooded with calls opposing it.

Thousands of people called Capitol Hill and local offices this week after receiving an anonymous, recorded message that said their representatives support "privatizing Social Security." Recipients were given a toll-free number that connected them to the Capitol. The number belonged to the American Federation of Teachers, which said its line was hijacked.

"The dirty tricks have begun," said Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

If you recall, the telemarketing businesses warned that if the Do Not Call list passed, it would mean a lot of people losing jobs. Then they outsourced a bunch of call centers and people lost jobs anyway. NOW they can have ONE employee record a message and computers can play it for thousands of people trying to eat their suppers.

George Sorros or any other recognized PAC or 527 organization would have no reason to hide in the shadows with anonymous phone calls.

I think the most likely possibility is that it's a conservative and/or fundie group that wants to fight Bush on social security while not alienating him, because they need his support on other aspects of their reich-wing agenda (for example "protecting" marriage).

....I was given to understand, do not fall under the no-call guidelines. I could be mistaken, though....anyone know for sure?

I'm undecided as to whether I should rate it up or down. I definitely like the "Wall Street slot machine" frame and I also like "would cost taxpayers $2 trillion and decrease future benefits to retirees by 47%." Those are both great memes to get out.
On the other hand there are phrases like "despicable" and "dirty tricks" and implication of the American Federation of Teachers (who are innocent of course but it could raise questions in some people's minds).
I think that, on balance, popularizing this one is probably a plus. Anyone agree or disagree?

I don't see any need for opponents of privitization to be anonymous.

More likely, this is just the republicans casting themselves as victims.

They want to attack Bush's social security plan, but they also don't want him to get mad at them because they still want his support on "morals" issues.

In other words, they'd rather stab him in the back than tell him to his face.
