Dick Cheney, Dressing Down
Parka, Ski Cap at Odds With Solemnity of Auschwitz Ceremony

By Robin Givhan
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 28, 2005; Page C01

-snips-

At yesterday's gathering of world leaders in southern Poland to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the United States was represented by Vice President Cheney. The ceremony at the Nazi death camp was outdoors, so those in attendance, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, were wearing dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. Because it was cold and snowing, they were also wearing gentlemen's hats. In short, they were dressed for the inclement weather as well as the sobriety and dignity of the event.

The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower.

Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood. It is embroidered with his name. It reminded one of the way in which children's clothes are inscribed with their names before they are sent away to camp. And indeed, the vice president looked like an awkward boy amid the well-dressed adults.
------------

Just last week, in a frigid, snow-dusted Washington, Cheney sat outside through the entire inauguration without so much as a hat and without suffering frostbite. And clearly, Cheney owns a proper overcoat. The world saw it during his swearing-in as vice president. Cheney treated that ceremony with the dignity it deserved -- not simply through his demeanor, but also through his attire. Would he have dared to take the oath of office with a ski cap on? People would have justifiably considered that an insult to the office, the day, the country.

...........The vice president might have been warm in his parka, ski cap and hiking boots. But they had the unfortunate effect of suggesting that he was more concerned with his own comfort than the reason for braving the cold at all.

Why is he wearing a parka...with fur? He looks like a 6 year old girl. Why isn't it pink? He'd be pretty in pink.

247. George Bush made it a point to degrade the memory of the Holocaust too
When he visited the camp--I believe that was May 2003 right after he had started his own killing spree in Iraq.

He had Ari tell the reporters that the president asked the guide if she had a lot of people come who questioned the validity of holocaust claims.

(Like holocaust deniers would be going to Auschwitz, Duh!)

This quote was not in the AP account, only the New York Times report.

Funny, but it was during a time that they must have been planning the Auschwitz visit that Press Secretary Ari Fleischer decided he had better things to do than hang with that bunch anymore.

I wonder if it had any connection to what he was told he was going to have to do.

Nobody tells Cheney what to do, not even the wife, who normally, in a situation like this might have said, "Do you think that's appropriate? There will be cameras there." Either she knows better than to question him or she's as much of an asshole as he is.

214. That's my point
She probably spent more time fussing than usual over her outfit, and failed to herd him like she used to do when he was SECDEF. She watches him, closely. They know each other better than they know themselves, they've been together since High School.

She even tells him what he can and cannot eat. There is a great photo of him from several years back, where he was on the rubber chicken circuit, and the menu was surf and turf. The missus told the waiter to only bring the fish for Mr. C, and he is shown surreptitiously swiping a chunk of meat off his wife's plate.

He had a topcoat and leather shoes in his wardrobe, he wore them the following day laying a wreath. He's just thoughtless. But they all are....

169. Actually, I doubt Bush would be different...
Bush surrounds himself with people that won't tell him anything is wrong. I remember when the last White House press secretary was on The Daily Show, and John Stewart asked him why no one ever corrected Bush's pronunciation on words such as "nuclear". The man looked honestly appalled and said, "What? Correct the President Of The United States???!!" (I swear, you could hear the capital letters...)

By the way... Why wasn't Bush and/or Rice there, ????

Back in the old days, like, say, when GHW BUSH was VP, all the VP ever did was GO TO FUNERALS. Remember old "out of the loop" George?

I think he is being punished as one of the architects of the Iraq policy, and he knows it. His outfit is a way of pouting about it.

I'm waiting for the televised public whipping of Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, next....course, that will only happen when the coup is complete and weecowboy is anointed Leader for Life....

10. I am not upset at this
Perhaps he might have found a black parka, but it was cold as hell there and he is an old man with heart trouble. Would one of the hats on the guy behind him been better? If so, why? It is a "common" head warmer in Eastern Europe. The cap Cheney has on is a "common" head warmer in the US.

The real tragedy here is that Bush didn't see it necessary to go to this event or to Davos.

Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 11:47 AM by Beetwasher
He's the VP. If he doesn't want to dress appropriately for these occasions (or can't because of his heart) he should give the job up. He dressed appropriately for his swearing in and it was just as cold. Dressing appropriately is part of his fucking job. He's a douchebag for doing this and it clearly shows he doesn't fucking give a shit (like we didn't already know that)

And you know what else? He could find and afford clothes that are just as warm and a lot more tasteful. Hell, my overcoat is one of the warmest coats I own. He's a fucking douche.

"Just last week, in a frigid, snow-dusted Washington, Cheney sat outside through the entire inauguration without so much as a hat and without suffering frostbite. And clearly, Cheney owns a proper overcoat. The world saw it during his swearing-in as vice president. Cheney treated that ceremony with the dignity it deserved -- not simply through his demeanor, but also through his attire. Would he have dared to take the oath of office with a ski cap on? 77. There are a number of potential reasons why this happened
I'm quite certain that he didn't plan this and that he was embarrassed by it. I'm also sure that a low level staffer was subsequently berated for not packing the appropriate clothes, or for messing up the schedule so that Cheney thought he was going on a tour instead of a memorial service.

Cheney is a lot of negative things, but he is a master politician. He understands the importance of symbolism and would never have approached such a service dismissively. I would put a great deal of cash down saying that someone on his staff screwed up royally and Cheney was sitting there highly embarrassed.

All of that being said, Cheney is an ass and criminal and should be locked away for the good of the country and the world for a variety of crimes against humanity. Poor dress at this memorial service is way down on the list.

79. No Way, I Don't Buy It
He knew exactly where he was going and has enough money to buy appropriate clothes if none were packed. Give me a break. With all the security and planning that goes into any appearance by Cheney I find it hard to believe it was a mix up of some sort.

I don't know why you feel you need to make excuses for Cheney, but none of those comes even close to cutting it. Yes, he's a master politician, and knew exactly what he was doing. He was thumbing his nose at everyone there and sending a message "I can do whatever the fuck I want and dress however I want so fuck you all there's nothing you can do about it. I'm comfortable like this, fuck you and your ceremony."

Yup, he knew exactly what he was doing and didn't care. There's no way in the world he could think his clothes were or would be appropriate. He didn't care. Just look at his face in those pictures. He didn't want to be there and didn't care.

"The government would be responsible for keeping track of how much money is in each worker's account and give the lump sums to a financial services company to invest, a mechanism aimed at keeping administrative fees low, they said."

So....let me get this straight: They're selling this thing with the spin that people can do better with their money than the government, and can have more "freedom", yet, according to this, the GOVERNMENT is going to invest the money in each person's account???

This just gets worse every day.

242. Press talks about Cheney's overcoat, not his secret Energy meetings.
The press would rather discuss an inappropriate overcoat that was probably a snaffu (or less probably a sign that Cheney is relegated to funeral attendance duty and this is his 'up yours' to the WH).

Regarding Cheney, the press should be talking about how no bid contracts were awarded to Halliburton or about how temporary price caps were not instituted during the California energy crisis. Or they could talk about the lack of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq or about the current efforts to kill Social Security as we know it or suppression of voting in swing states or efforts to switch from progressive taxation to regressive taxation in the guise of tax reform.

So much easier for the press to talk about Cheney's overcoat.

If we ever needed proof that the press is no longer free, well now we have it.

Grrrrr...

61. bush* INHERITED Holocaust Blood-money from his grandpa (link)

bush* should AT LEAST give the blood-money BACK TO THE VICTIMS...over $1.5 MILLION with interest....

http://www.john-loftus.com/Thyssen.asp

-snip-

Throughout the Bush family's decades of public life, the American press has gone out of its way to overlook one historical fact - that through Union Banking Corporation (UBC), Prescott Bush, and his father-in-law, George Herbert Walker, along with German industrialist Fritz Thyssen, financed Adolf Hitler before and during World War II. It was first reported in 1994 by John Loftus and Mark Aarons in The Secret War Against the Jews: How Western Espionage Betrayed the Jewish People.

Union Banking Corporation

Early in 1924, Hendrick J. Kouwenhoven, the managing director of Bank voor Handel en Scheepvaart, traveled to New York to meet with Walker and the Harriman brothers. Together, they established The Union Banking Corporation. The UBC's headquarters was located at the same 39 Broadway address as Harriman & Co. As the German economy recovered through the mid to late '20s, Walker and Harriman's firm sold over $50,000,000 worth of German bonds to American investors, who profited enormously from the economic boom in Germany. In 1926, August Thyssen died at the age of 84. Fritz was now in control of one of the largest industrial families in Europe. He quickly created the United Steel Works (USW), the biggest industrial conglomerate in German history. Thyssen hired Albert Volger, one of the Ruhr's most influential industrial directors, as director General of USW. Thyssen also brought Fredich Flick, another German family juggernaut, on board. Flick owned coal and steel industries throughout Germany and Poland and desperately wanted to invest into the Thyssen empire. One of the primary motivations for the Thyssen/Flick massive steel and coal merger was suppressing the new labor and socialist movements.

That year in New York, George Walker decided to give his new son in law, Prescott Bush, a big break. Walker made Bush a vice president of Harriman & Co. Prescott's new office employed many of his classmates from his Yale class of 1917, including Roland Harriman and Knight Woolley.....

In fact, Walker hired Bush to help him supervise the new Thyssen/Flick United Steel Works. One section of the USW empire was the Consolidated Silesian Steel Corporation and the Upper Silesian Coal and Steel Company located in the Silesian section of Poland. Thyssen and Flick paid Bush and Walker generously, but it was worth every dime. Their new business arrangement pleased them all financially, and the collective talents of all four men and their rapid success astonished the business world.

86. Oh, Cheney definitely has serious heart problems (serious post)
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 01:32 PM by CBHagman
There is a medically documented history of heart disease with Cheney; of that I have absolutely no doubt. The doctors at George Washington University Hospital even did a formal press conference when Cheney had another "event" (and the placement of a stent) following the 2000 election.

On edit: And don't hold that against the good doctors at GWU. They have an amazing cardiac team, and they're not politically in the same camp as Cheney. :-)

That said, he could have dressed up as befits a world leader at a solemn event. The guy's a millionaire and lived in Wyoming, which is hardly the tropics. Are there no black wool coats, special thermal underwear and gloves, fur hats and the like he could have worn to the 60th anniversary of the liberation of one of the most notorious death camps of the 20th century?

Cheney deserves to be harshly criticized for this. The problem is, as James Wolcott said in another context, is that these people are never sorry and never wrong. Don't expect the press to be rough on Cheney about this, and don't expect the administration to do anything but prance around declaring their own righteousness.

These people make me sick.

Perhaps he is "dressed down" to appeal to his "Jew hating" hillbilly base ... and other sundered white supremacist Bubbas? It's his little rebel statement that the commemoration of *all* the suffering and deaths of millions of Jews is NOT important enough to dress in formal mourning attire or send the leader of our country.

Excusing all else (embroidered "staff 2001" knit CAP, fluffy trimmed German parka), check out those nasty BROWN hiking boots.

No Cheney dressed like this on purpose. Combined with Bush's absence, it's their (Neo-Con Executive Branch) way of thumbing their nose at all things European.

Dateline -- The support line ... Sneed hears Vice President Dick Cheney sported an orange tie Wednesday when he attended the ceremony in Oswiecim, Poland, marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp.

Why the orange cravat?

*Answer: It was Cheney's visual support for Ukraine's new President Viktor Yuschenko, who also attended the ceremony, and his "Orange revolution" -- a term used for the peaceful protest that helped overturn a rigged first election -- according to a top Sneed source who was there.

He's an old man with heart problems and poor health. I have chronic neck/back pain and recently bought a similar parka that's down-filled, knee length and has a fur-trimmed hood (only because I couldn't find one this warm without the fur). It is the warmest, most comfortable coat I've ever had. I wear it to many places where it may see inappropriate to others, from formal affairs to trips to the mall on cool days.

It has made my life much more bearable by keeping my neck and back joints warm. Cheney is a Wyoming man and knows full well the importance of dressing warm in cold weather. If I had attended this ceremony, I'd have done the same thing.

AAAch, I can't believe I'm actually agreeing with something this nutcase has done!

He's the VP. If he doesn't want (or can't because of his heart) to dress appropriately for these occasions he should give the job up. He dressed appropriately for his swearing in and it was just as cold. Dressing appropriately is part of his fucking job. He's a douchebag for doing this and it clearly shows he doesn't fucking give a shit (like we didn't already know that)

People would have justifiably considered that an insult to the office, the day, the country."

And you know what else? He could find and afford clothes that are just as warm and a lot more tasteful. Hell, my overcoat is one of the warmest coats I own. He's a fucking douche.

he's richer than most anyone of us knows!

Here he is in some other photos I found of him playing Cartman on TV and when he went to a costume party as Hitler, you'd think he'd know better? I only WISH I could find the image of "George Costanza" in the puffy jacket! and yes, I really find Cartman (Cheney) offensive, just like the show.

You don't represent the country at such an important very somber occasion. He's the vice president for god's sake, it's slightly different.

I cant understand why he would dress like that, it had to be intentional. His staff would have known it was inappropriate.

How old are those people? 80? 90?

Like they don't have some aches and pains?

Would he attend a winter service at ground zero dressed in that get up?

This was just his way of thumbing his nose at Europe like others on this string have suggested!

He could get something custom-made that was not only warm enough, but formal enough for occasions such as this. You'd think as the VP one of his staff would make sure he had such things, since his fucking bitch of a wife is too busy writing bad novels and parading her grandchildren out dressed as the grim reaper.

121. Okay, but why olive colored?
If he had worn the same clothes, but the coat had been black or very dark, he wouldn't have stood out so much, and if anybody complained they could have made the arguments you are making. But the olive drab color stands out like a sore thumb against the sea of black. And why the white fur collar sticking up in the air?

If, because of medical concerns or pain, he needs to wear certain clothes to keep him warmer than most in such situations, shouldn't they have appropriately formal-looking clothing available to him?

That is foul/extreme weather gear--he probably got it from Ramstein. I have a coat just like it, issued to me when I was assigned to a very cold place. I've never worn it to a memorial service, though.

What is it with this administration? They just LOVE to wear military clothing, but they don't like to actually SERVE in the military!!!!

There IS outerwear that is both formal AND very very warm. He has plenty of money and access. There is no reason in the world for him to have been dressed this way. I would never dress like that for an honorary service for the dead (which is what this was), or a funeral. Never. And I don't have one fraction of the money Cheney has.

44. It's not like Cheney is from the Sunny South. He grew up out West
in the damn cold and he has spent years in diplomatic circles where he knows the importance of appropriate attire since he is representing the United States of America. And another thing, a little discomfort in the cold should have been nothing for Cheney, especially when people who survived these death camps were there.

I loathe these people. I really do.

He was seated with various heads of state such as the president of Poland: Aleksander Kwasniewski and his wife Jolanda, Israel's President Moshe Katsav, Russian president Vladimir Putin, Jacques Chirac of France, Prince Edward of Great Britain, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Prince Joachim of Denmark, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, among others. I believe that the survivors deserved more respect from the US. At the very least, a black parka, pants, shoes and hat would have been more appropriate.

First of all, this freeptoid needs to know his history - Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army.

Second, it was militarism that helped to create the death camps, and for a civilian to wear military garb was totally inappropriate and tasteless.

crowd. You would think that people who have been in the public eye as long as the Cheneys have would know what is appropriate at an occassion like this. By why am I not surprised. Mrs. Bush 41 wore a flowered dress with no sleeves to visit the same place when her husband was VP (read it in "The Family).

cheney's choice of outfits for such a solemn occasion was DELIBERATE and insulting.....

don't for one minute think that it wasn't deliberate....cheney has circulated with diplomats for more than 40 years....he KNOWS what to wear, and he WANTED TO SEND his message to the WORLD....

cheney travels in Air Force II, with an entire STAFF, probably as many as 40 people assisting him, or MORE.....

there is NO EXCUSE for throwing on an old knit hat and wearing hunting clothes that belong in a muddy duck blind, rather than at a formal International Diplomatic event....

the message from dick is clear: "I don't give a fuck about all this crap !!!!"

89. Wear the appropriate costume Dick.
Clothes do make the man/woman, especially in politics. Especially in world politics. Especially when you are representing a country at a very solemn event.

It doesn't matter if you agree that the "appropriate costume" is good or necessary and you modify it to make it work (for instance wear lots of warm clothes underneath). However, if you are going to represent a country and show respect, you just have to do this. Like wearing a suit to work. Who ever thought that a boxy suit and tie were comfortable or even decent to wear should be hung over a shark tank. They aren't. But they are the costume to wear to business meetings in the USA. The costume to wear to somber occasions in Europe is not what cheney has on.

I have a topcoat, and it looks nice, but it's just not warm enough for a lot of these Chicago winter days. And I don't buy the speculation that this was some sort of staff fuckup. If that was the case they wouldn't have hesitated to issue an explanation before the fact. If they claim staff error now, they're just making up an excuse.

...do you really live in Chicago? I live in Toronto. Our weather is usually similar, yet your post makes no sense to me. This week, it got down to -20°C (-4°F), not counting windchill. I didn't have an Auschwitz ceremony to go to, I'm not the VP of the U.S.A. and I don't have his staff -- yet I dressed better than he did. It's all a matter of giving a flying fuck. I do, he obviously doesn't.

Bravo to Cheney for dressing for the weather, not for show. More people should.

Yeah, those other peasants there obviously had no idea how to dress for the weather/occasion. I mean, they dressed nothing like him. Thank God (Mammon?) Cheney was there to show them how it should be done. Bravo, indeed. :+

Looking at him in that ridiculous jacket, slumped in his chair with his legs sprawling open, is disgusting. I saw some astounding bad taste when I was touring concentration camps for my modern German history coursework.

In Dachau, I saw some idiots chasing each other and throwing snowballs in the campgrounds, across from the crematoria. My research has given me a rare appreciation of the scale of suffering in that place, so their behavior just enraged me. I grabbed one by the arm and asked him in German and in English if he had any idea where he was, and whether he couldn't possibly find a more suitable place to play in the snow. I also saw people posing for photos in the camps like it was Disneyland or something.

just like 'Saving Private Ryan' began the WWII journey to REALITY....the United States deserves a lot of credit for creating Holocaust Memorial Museums (in Detroit first, then DC, and other cities).....which always struck me as ODD that the USA took the lead, when GERMANY should have....most Holocaust Victims were outcasts, even after released from the camps...AMERICA didn't even accept them...in Germany, their homes had other people living there....which brings us to the present Israel/Palestine war...

My friend is an Austrian, who still does NOT believe that there were nazi concentration camps in Austria, and claims that Austria had nothing to do with the Holocaust...hometown: Linz....the DENIAL runs deep, sort of like OUR American DENIAL of the massacres in Iraq....

But it's interesting that you say that. I read in a Central Europe Review article that citizens of Oœwiêcim, better known by the German name Auschwitz, acted like they barely knew anything about the Holocaust when they were interviewed, which was astonishing. I guess as people who are so physically removed from it, we tend to expect that people who grow up near the site would be more conscious.

Lynn seems to be dressed appropriately. You mean she didn't say, "What the hell? I'm not going out with you dressed like that."

If he's cold or worried about his health, I'm sure he's heard about "layering". With layers of the right material, one can be toasty warm.

Also, a high-quality overcoat would do the job. And an aide would have to be brain-dead not to know this is highly inappropriate. Just look at him! Looks like he's going to a football game. Embarrassing!Sheesh!!

144. something else about this
I can't ever remember a previous ceremony honoring the liberation of Auschwitz or any other concentration camp. I remember a few times when anniversaries were noted but never anything like this. (And I think I would remember an Auschwitz celebration because 1/27 is my brother's birthday.) It seems odd to me that, suddenly, on the 60th anniversary, there is suddenly so much publicity for it.

Not that I think it shouldn't be observed -- it should. But why not on the 40th anniversary? Or the 50th? Or the 30th? Those are usually big anniversaries. In fact, I've been told that the 40th anniversary of an event is usually one of the largest because, by then, the passions of the event have cooled sufficiently and those who were involved are of an age to have some influence. But the 60th? By then, most of those involved are dead.

Or is that why we have waited that long to remember this event???

I just find it very curious.

Next, we'll see one of those hungry children ads, with little Dicky staring out at us with hollow, hungry eyes, as the narrator says, "Won't you please help Dicky? 5 cents a day from everyone watching can feed and clothe a child in a Third World country (the United States)!"

The photo absolutely screams for a South Park takeoff...

184. San Diego paper went so far as to mention Cheney's dark overcoat
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 06:36 PM by gristy
So :wtf: is going on here?

www.signonsandiego.com/news/world/20050128-0553-cheney.html

The Soviet Army freed prisoners at the camps on Jan. 27, 1945, as the war neared its end. Between 1 million and 1.5 million prisoners perished in gas chambers or died of starvation and disease at Auschwitz and Birkenau. Overall, 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust.

Large snowflakes fell on Cheney's dark overcoat as he and his daughter Liz paused at a wall where Nazi police executed at least 3,000 prisoners. Without words, they placed a bouquet of red and ivory roses at the base of what is called the Wall of Death.

Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 07:59 PM by diamond14
apparently, dick did have a suitable DARK OVERCOAT with him...which he wore at a different event, also at Auschwitz...

this new PHOTO makes it even more clear that dick DELIBERATELY insulted the Jewish VICTIMS, the American People (who he was representing, since bush* was too lazy to go), the Polish People and actually, the WHOLE WORLD...DELIBERATE, nasty, rude, insulting....

U.S. Vice President dick cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney walk towards the Death Wall to lay flowers in the former Nazi death camp Auschwitz, in Oswiecim, southern Poland

with an old knit hat that says: "Staff 2001", and a MILITARY JACKET...it doesn't get more insulting than this...an embarrassment to America....

I would assume that the airlift wing that runs the presidential and vice-presidential aircraft keep these on board for use if the aircraft lands before it's supposed to.

As for his name, it was probably embroidered onto the jacket when he was first sworn in. Probably every other VP has had one just like it, and when they become former VPs the flight crew presents them with the jackets as parting gifts.

This doesn't explain why he felt the need to wear the damn thing to this very solemn ceremony...I vote for the "I did it to say Fuck You" explanation.

Good Lord. It's not like we expect him to be a fashionista (because he is.. well.. Dick Cheney)... but could he at least have some decorum and show a little respect?? He looks like he's going to a football tailgater... not a commemoration ceremony. What a Jackass. Did he not get the memo that it might be frowned upon if he shows up looking like "Nanook from the North"?? I'm sure it is tough to find footwear to hide those cloven hooves of his... but honestly, Hiking Boots?? Did he want to give the German Security Guards a few pointers in marching in lock-step? Once again... we hold that Ugly American banner high, don't we? Good Lord... if this is the best the Bush Administration could do in the name of Diplomacy, then I'm afraid we're all screwed (as if we didn't know that November 3rd).

With all the people I've been hearing on other message boards saying things like "we don't care what anyone thinks aout us" I've come up with an idea...

Someone needs to photoshop a big foam-rubber hand on to Cheney like they sell at football games. Slap it over his glove so it looks as natural as possible. He does look like he's at a football game anyway with his disrespectful outfit.

Excellent photoshops. I'm sending them on w/o explanation.

Europe is very formal, especially for occasions like this. Cheney's informality during the ceremony commemorating the million and a half plus who died in Auschwitz is way beyond poor taste.

Here is an excellent Der Spiegel piece on what one experiences when visiting Auschwitz.

and tell others in the ghettos what was happening were largely ignored. Nobody believed that civilization could deteriorate to such a cold-blooded level. Some of those unbelievers even ended up paying for their own trip to Auschwitz.

How many times has the scenario taken place in the US, that those who know have to tear their hair out trying to convince others that our country is not about democracy and freedom but rather, occupation, subjugation, death and destruction?

What a thoughtless piece of shit this weirdo is. Sad part is when Bush finally dies choking on a pretzel, this sorry piece of a blob of flesh will be preznit.

This man is a national disgrace. And I still don't see the light at the end of our tunnel of the darkness they have led us into.

We must all band together and not give up the fight. We MUST take our country back from these thugs. Just because you have money doesn't make you a class act. Cheney is the political equivalent of a washed up porn star.

I am still waiting for themselves to shoot themselves in the foot. Even though they have been doing it all along, soon or a later the Humpty Dumpty factor will be their downfall. The sooner the better. Too bad it will probably be later than sooner.

278. Isn't Dick already preznit?
Reportedly he carries the "football" --the presidential emergency response kit.

Reagan + Bush I + Dan Quayle = Dubya. Dubya is the :) on the true face of this administration. An administration running back to Reagan and Nixon.

2004 "election" was proof that many Americans want the goofball "I could have a beer with him" guy they find non-threatening. More serious, thoughtful, (god forbid, policy wonk!) candidates like Gore and Kerry make folks who don't want to think, uncomfortable.

Vanity Fair published photos a year or two ago of the Bush administration cohorts, shot by Annie Liebowitz. They were candid, close up, full frontal portraits in black and white. Looking into the eyes of those people was staring into the abyss. Surprising that the photos were ever released.

Cheney's slouchy demeanor at Auschwitz reveals someone who knows he doesn't even have to pretend to care what anyone else on the planet thinks.

275. It signals his contempt

The VP is a professional person/bureaucrat/CEO who clearly knows that how one is dressed can say a great deal about the person. Either that or all those multi thousand dollar suits he and W wear are just for kicks.

So dressing in a ski outfit parka and mountain boots at such a solemn occasion reveals exactly what he wished, that the USA is an island unto itself, where the brave men from Texas and Wyoming need not gussy up like those other presidents, premiers and religious leaders. Heck no, they're the kings of America. Why should they dress properly at a ceremony that marked the liberation of one of the most atrocious places the modern world has ever seen?
