Parka, Ski Cap at Odds With Solemnity of Auschwitz Ceremony

At yesterday's gathering of world leaders in southern Poland to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the United States was represented by Vice President Cheney. The ceremony at the Nazi death camp was outdoors, so those in attendance, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, were wearing dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. Because it was cold and snowing, they were also wearing gentlemen's hats. In short, they were dressed for the inclement weather as well as the sobriety and dignity of the event.

The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower.

Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood. It is embroidered with his name. It reminded one of the way in which children's clothes are inscribed with their names before they are sent away to camp. And indeed, the vice president looked like an awkward boy amid the well-dressed adults.

Just last week, in a frigid, snow-dusted Washington, Cheney sat outside through the entire inauguration without so much as a hat and without suffering frostbite. And clearly, Cheney owns a proper overcoat. The world saw it during his swearing-in as vice president. Cheney treated that ceremony with the dignity it deserved -- not simply through his demeanor, but also through his attire. Would he have dared to take the oath of office with a ski cap on? People would have justifiably considered that an insult to the office, the day, the country.

...........The vice president might have been warm in his parka, ski cap and hiking boots. But they had the unfortunate effect of suggesting that he was more concerned with his own comfort than the reason for braving the cold at all.

When he visited the camp--I believe that was May 2003 right after he had started his own killing spree in Iraq.

He had Ari tell the reporters that the president asked the guide if she had a lot of people come who questioned the validity of holocaust claims.

Nobody tells Cheney what to do, not even the wife, who normally, in a situation like this might have said, "Do you think that's appropriate? There will be cameras there." Either she knows better than to question him or she's as much of an asshole as he is.

She probably spent more time fussing than usual over her outfit, and failed to herd him like she used to do when he was SECDEF. She watches him, closely. They know each other better than they know themselves, they've been together since High School.

She even tells him what he can and cannot eat. There is a great photo of him from several years back, where he was on the rubber chicken circuit, and the menu was surf and turf. The missus told the waiter to only bring the fish for Mr. C, and he is shown surreptitiously swiping a chunk of meat off his wife's plate.

He had a topcoat and leather shoes in his wardrobe, he wore them the following day laying a wreath. He's just thoughtless. But they all are....

I'm quite certain that he didn't plan this and that he was embarrassed by it. I'm also sure that a low level staffer was subsequently berated for not packing the appropriate clothes, or for messing up the schedule so that Cheney thought he was going on a tour instead of a memorial service.

Cheney is a lot of negative things, but he is a master politician. He understands the importance of symbolism and would never have approached such a service dismissively. I would put a great deal of cash down saying that someone on his staff screwed up royally and Cheney was sitting there highly embarrassed.

All of that being said, Cheney is an ass and criminal and should be locked away for the good of the country and the world for a variety of crimes against humanity. Poor dress at this memorial service is way down on the list.

He knew exactly where he was going and has enough money to buy appropriate clothes if none were packed. Give me a break. With all the security and planning that goes into any appearance by Cheney I find it hard to believe it was a mix up of some sort.

I don't know why you feel you need to make excuses for Cheney, but none of those comes even close to cutting it. Yes, he's a master politician, and knew exactly what he was doing. He was thumbing his nose at everyone there and sending a message "I can do whatever the fuck I want and dress however I want so fuck you all there's nothing you can do about it. I'm comfortable like this, fuck you and your ceremony."

Yup, he knew exactly what he was doing and didn't care. There's no way in the world he could think his clothes were or would be appropriate. He didn't care. Just look at his face in those pictures. He didn't want to be there and didn't care.

That would be a stupid thing to do on purpose. His staff wouldn't allow it, his wife wouldn't allow it, and his colleagues wouldn't allow it. Something happened to his clothes and they didn't have time to get new things at the last minute.

Regarding Cheney, the press should be talking about how no bid contracts were awarded to Halliburton or about how temporary price caps were not instituted during the California energy crisis. Or they could talk about the lack of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq or about the current efforts to kill Social Security as we know it or suppression of voting in swing states or efforts to switch from progressive taxation to regressive taxation in the guise of tax reform.

That year in New York, George Walker decided to give his new son in law, Prescott Bush, a big break. Walker made Bush a vice president of Harriman & Co. Prescott's new office employed many of his classmates from his Yale class of 1917, including Roland Harriman and Knight Woolley.....

There is a medically documented history of heart disease with Cheney; of that I have absolutely no doubt. The doctors at George Washington University Hospital even did a formal press conference when Cheney had another "event" (and the placement of a stent) following the 2000 election.

That said, he could have dressed up as befits a world leader at a solemn event. The guy's a millionaire and lived in Wyoming, which is hardly the tropics. Cheney deserves to be harshly criticized for this. The problem is, as James Wolcott said in another context, is that these people are never sorry and never wrong. Don't expect the press to be rough on Cheney about this, and don't expect the administration to do anything but prance around declaring their own righteousness.

He's an old man with heart problems and poor health. I have chronic neck/back pain and recently bought a similar parka that's down-filled, knee length and has a fur-trimmed hood (only because I couldn't find one this warm without the fur). It is the warmest, most comfortable coat I've ever had. I wear it to many places where it may see inappropriate to others, from formal affairs to trips to the mall on cool days.

It has made my life much more bearable by keeping my neck and back joints warm. Cheney is a Wyoming man and knows full well the importance of dressing warm in cold weather. If I had attended this ceremony, I'd have done the same thing.

Here he is in some other photos I found of him playing Cartman on TV and when he went to a costume party as Hitler, you'd think he'd know better? I only WISH I could find the image of "George Costanza" in the puffy jacket! and yes, I really find Cartman (Cheney) offensive, just like the show.

Geez Louise. That is just downright embarrassing, I'm sorry, people. He's wearing what looks like a NYLON ski jacket.

You don't represent the country at such an important very somber occasion. He's the vice president for god's sake, it's slightly different.

I cant understand why he would dress like that, it had to be intentional. His staff would have known it was inappropriate.

Like they don't have some aches and pains?

Would he attend a winter service at ground zero dressed in that get up?

If he had worn the same clothes, but the coat had been black or very dark, he wouldn't have stood out so much, and if anybody complained they could have made the arguments you are making. If, because of medical concerns or pain, he needs to wear certain clothes to keep him warmer than most in such situations, shouldn't they have appropriately formal-looking clothing available to him?

That is foul/extreme weather gear--he probably got it from Ramstein. I have a coat just like it, issued to me when I was assigned to a very cold place. I've never worn it to a memorial service, though.

Well, they took it back after my enlistment ended. I really wanted to keep mine, because that parka is SO warm. That is a military issue cold weather parka.

If I remember correctly, I was only issued a parka at my first permanent party station and never again, even though I went to a station overseas that got cold in the winter(France).
Those things were warm though.

Second, it was militarism that helped to create the death camps, and for a civilian to wear military garb was totally inappropriate and tasteless.

Clothes do make the man/woman, especially in politics. Especially in world politics. Especially when you are representing a country at a very solemn event.

It doesn't matter if you agree that the "appropriate costume" is good or necessary and you modify it to make it work (for instance wear lots of warm clothes underneath). However, if you are going to represent a country and show respect, you just have to do this. Like wearing a suit to work. Who ever thought that a boxy suit and tie were comfortable or even decent to wear should be hung over a shark tank. They aren't. But they are the costume to wear to business meetings in the USA. The costume to wear to somber occasions in Europe is not what cheney has on.

I have a topcoat, and it looks nice, but it's just not warm enough for a lot of these Chicago winter days. Basically, that distinguished-man garment sends the message, "I only have to walk from my heated car to my heated office." Bravo to Cheney for dressing for the weather, not for show. More people should.

silk long underwear, sock liners and glove liners; merino wool socks, leather dress boots with Gore-Tex liners, merino wool mid-layers, dress shirt with wool sweater, winter weight wool suit, wool scarf, heavy wool overcoat, fur-lined leather gloves with Gore-Tex and a fur hat.

I spend lots of time outdoors with my horse in all types of weather. If you've got the money, you can stay warm and be stylish.

Did you take a look at the pictures of the Holocaust survivors? Do you think they're sending the message "I only have to walk from my heated car to my heated office"? ANd what do you think the prisoners at Auschwitz were given to wear during the freezing winters? Parkas? Cheney looks like an ass.

And I don't buy the speculation that this was some sort of staff fuckup. If that was the case they wouldn't have hesitated to issue an explanation before the fact. If they claim staff error now, they're just making up an excuse.

I saw some astounding bad taste when I was touring concentration camps for my modern German history coursework.

In Dachau, I saw some idiots chasing each other and throwing snowballs in the campgrounds, across from the crematoria. My research has given me a rare appreciation of the scale of suffering in that place, so their behavior just enraged me. I grabbed one by the arm and asked him in German and in English if he had any idea where he was, and whether he couldn't possibly find a more suitable place to play in the snow. I also saw people posing for photos in the camps like it was Disneyland or something.

It also disturbed me to see what appears to be a gradual commercialization of the Holocaust. I don't know how to describe it, but something about the ambience around the camp and even the presentation during the tour didn't seem right to me.

and locals wouldn't even give us driving directions to the camp. It seemed they didn't want to acknowledge its presence and pretended not to know what we were talking about.

just like 'Saving Private Ryan' began the WWII journey to REALITY....the United States deserves a lot of credit for creating Holocaust Memorial Museums (in Detroit first, then DC, and other cities).....which always struck me as ODD that the USA took the lead, when GERMANY should have....most Holocaust Victims were outcasts, even after released from the camps...AMERICA didn't even accept them...in Germany, their homes had other people living there....which brings us to the present Israel/Palestine war...


My friend is an Austrian, who still does NOT believe that there were nazi concentration camps in Austria, and claims that Austria had nothing to do with the Holocaust...hometown: Linz....the DENIAL runs deep, sort of like OUR American DENIAL of the massacres in Iraq....

I read in a Central Europe Review article that citizens of Oœwiêcim, better known by the German name Auschwitz, acted like they barely knew anything about the Holocaust when they were interviewed, which was astonishing. I guess as people who are so physically removed from it, we tend to expect that people who grow up near the site would be more conscious.

If he's cold or worried about his health, I'm sure he's heard about "layering". With layers of the right material, one can be toasty warm.

Also, a high-quality overcoat would do the job. And an aide would have to be brain-dead not to know this is highly inappropriate. Just look at him! Looks like he's going to a football game. Embarrassing!Sheesh!!
