NYT: Experts Dispute Bush on Gay-Adoption Issue

Are children worse off being raised by gay or lesbian couples than by heterosexual parents?

Responding on Thursday to a question about gay adoption, President Bush suggested that they were.

"Studies have shown," Mr. Bush said in an interview with The New York Times, "that the ideal is where a child is raised in a married family with a man and a woman."

But experts say there is no scientific evidence that children raised by gay couples do any worse - socially, academically or emotionally - than their peers raised in more traditional households.

Since 1980, researchers have published about 25 studies comparing children from same-sex households with peers in traditional families, using measures of social adjustment, school performance, mental health and emotional resilience. Some of the studies have focused on elementary-school children, others on those not quite teenagers, a few on adolescents; a handful have followed children for years. Uniformly, the authors have reported that there are no significant developmental differences between the two groups of children.

WASHINGTON — Challenging comments made by President Bush in an interview with The New York Times, the Human Rights Campaign stressed today that all major research studies show sexual orientation is irrelevant to parenting ability.

“Every credible study has shown that sexual orientation has no effect on parenting ability,” said HRC Political Director Winnie Stachelberg. “Adoption should be about what’s best for the child, not appealing to a political base. The nation’s leading child welfare, psychological and children’s health organizations agree that gay parents make just as good parents as straight ones. With so many children in foster care in need of permanently nurturing homes, it’s critically important that we put science before ideology when making family policy decisions.”

According to the Times, President Bush avoided answering a question on Florida’s ban denying gay and lesbian individuals the right to adopt, saying he was unaware of it. The president said that while “children can receive love from gay couples … studies have shown that the ideal is where a child is raised in a married family with a man and a woman.”

However, a 2001 meta-analysis of two decades of studies on the topic shows that the sexual orientation of a parent is irrelevant to the development of a child's mental health and social development and to the quality of a parent-child relationship. The Bush administration has failed to see the facts.

I suppose by lying so often the Bush adminstration could convince themselves that they know what they are talking about.

are from right wing fundie fruitcakes who pull figures out of thin air and make up the rest, then write it all down in a convincing form and attempt to pass it off as a legitimate study.

Not one of them have any regard for the truth whatsoever.

Though I doubt that matters to Bush anyway, I don't think these other studies have found widespread circulation.

She was a big time payrollee of Peter Coors drawing in the big bucks for being a gay coordinator.

Bush/Cheney used her completely in 2000 when they visited with gays. She refused to stand up for gay rights in 2004. But now she's writing a book cashing in on her status as gay and GOP. It goes to show even gay daughters can become political whores for the money.
